So, this MP didn't realise for 20 months that his mortgage had been paid off. Oh, I "should have kept a tighter rein" and I feel "terrible about the situation".
Yes, I bet he does. ::)
"A former environment minister has admitted claiming £16,000 on expenses for a mortgage that did not exist.
Labour MP Elliot Morley claimed £800 per month for a property in SLady bitshorpe, Lincolnshire, when the mortgage had already been paid.
Mr Morley told the BBC he repaid the money after realising he had mistakenly continued claiming for his mortgage payments after it was repaid in 2006."

Blimey Nick, where you been, happens all the time ::) ;D ;D.

There does seem to be a massive can of worms opening. I feel that those MP's who are so keen to pay back money must feel that their claim was a bit iffy in the first place. If genuine within the rules why would you offer to pay it back? it is the system that is wrong and needs changing. Here we are talking MP's but what about all the top bankers, no one has mentioned their expense accounts. :(
Where expense's are available, be it government or private companies there will always be abuse, most of which goes without being noticed. :(
-
I would imagine that the more marginal the seat, the faster they are paying back. ;)
-
But what's next, giving burglars the chance to give the swag back if their caught out and let em off scott free >:(.

So who has the POwer to just "Sack" these MP's for such things?
If someone did sack them, then start again with new blood they would think twice about doing the same.
Also the disgraced MP's should me made to go on Job Seekers Allowance for at least two years to see how they can survive on that money, using there money (savings) to keep them at the lifestyle they are accustomed too....

If only there were more people who think this way then maybe we would live in a better society :y.

Why do you think the government have been introducing all these new laws and god knows how many CCTV cameras over the last 10 years?
-
Presumably all these capital items - leather armchair, designer furniture bla ,bla are the property of the tax payer as we have paid for them..
If I need a printer at home for my job and I claim it on expenses, it belongs to the company and they will rightly want it back in due course.
So after the next election .... 2nd hand plasma tv anyone?

Still no one has taken to the streets.
Bankers ruin the economy by indisciminate lending
Billions given to the banks despite no guarantees
Billions borrowed, for kids not even born yet to pay back
Politicians on the make
Now if this was France then they would have been blockading the channel tunnel by now!

I would like to see these MP's investigated and prosecuted for fraud, but you can bet that won't happen.
If it was you or me though.............
"Benefit fraud - there's no escape, if's or buts"
One rule for us, and another for the "elite"
