We have been looking for a night shift engineer since beginning of the year and we are finding it hard to fill the position , maybe the permanent nights putting people off

Depends what you have under your belt already in the way of quals as to how long you spend at college, but once you are qualified, 2 days a week from 9-3 will see you paying the weekly bills easily if you can put in to practice what you've actually learned.

Go self employed.  Small add in free paper, start with dishwasher/washing machine install and build up slowly.  Outside taps, extra rads fitted.  Just take on the jobs you can cope with till the funds build up.

I asked a plumber with his details on his sweat shirt to price me taking off 5 rads and then putting them back on to decorate.  he quoted me £140, 70 for each trip, said he couldnt do it for 2 weeks as he was pulled out with it.  "Thank God for that"

Must admit whenever we have tried to get a plumber they say they are coming but never do >:(

Small jobs, good prices, you wont need to advertise after a month, word of mouth will bring the work in.

Me too - really surprised to hear it's hard to get work. Maybe training up as a sparks is the way to go. My youngest son is working as an electricians mate in London at the moment and want to get fully trained up but all the courses are fully booked!!

Just hope I'm not going to be looking for a job myself in a few months! ::)

Seems to be a glut of leeky's round here.....no building work and a big dash for cash training programme some 4-5 years ago has resulted in a very predicatable scenario of over supply.

The same will happen with sparkys to.

I do all my own plumbing, I find it very theraputic  :y

Its not always milk and honey mate,it can be a lot of hassle, and its not always just hot and cold as everyone thinks, you really have got to know what you are doing, when it comes to different systems and obviously gas.

Yes but, its not rocket science.

I find it quite straight forward, pretty logical if thats a good term.

The thing is I dont do it day in and day out so its not a haslle to me and I lok for no reward so can take time and plan it thoroughly.....I would also not let a plumber do work on my house for the water setup as I know I will spend more time and achieve a better job.

Exactly the problem, and I believe was predicted back at the time.

I quite enjoy doing my own plumbing, as you say, makes an enjoyable, rewarding change.  Couple of years back, spent a couple of days replacing Mrs TB's dad's boiler (which had sprung a leak), stats and programmers (all a million years old), and replacing a lot of the pipework surrounding it.

Got a CORGI aquaintance to cert the gas side of things, just for peace of mind.  Is CORGI/gassafe a requirement or recommendation nowadays?

Its still a grey area due to the detailed wording of the regs......you ahev to be able to demonstarte compitency and must be part of an approved scheme if carrying out work for reward.

As with all the regs, you get round them and drive a bus through the poor wording

So back to the corgi days, when you could diy (as long as you didn't charge) as long as you show you've done it properly?

Its displaying compitency that is the challenge....neither of these charging organisations set the regs, they simply offer a route for the pros to provide a service.

Corgi was a joke, to infrequent checks and very abused....i dont doubt that gas safe will be any different, there already advertising that thier members are engineers  ;D ;D (which is the biggest joke going!)

For boiler install, it does mean that the fitters can self certify rather than the likes of you or me who would need Building regs sign off (plus supply proof of compitent install).

Gas fitters cant sign a boiler off anyway unless you hold an energy efficiency certificate.Still obviously allowed to fit it,but not sign it for the database,as every boiler has to be registered now.

Not with electrics you don't.
You either take the test(s) and actually pass, or you don't work....end of.

You have to be joking, I spend more than that every day in the pub between finishing work at 3 and going home at 7.
