I have recently taken up cycling to the office from the station. (london marleybone to covent garden) its made me realise how fast even a cycle can be. I do it in 9 mins, tube was 25! considering motorbiking in. it would be 90% motorway but its about 80 miles
-
damn ran out of space on my mobile browser, I would have course have to swap my current bike for a better tourer that's better on the motorway. I was thinking honda deauville.
anyone here bike 80 miles each way on a commute?
-
Parking a motorbike in there is not always easy despite a 'bit' of help from Boris. I've done Soho a few times when I was working there.
P.S. I don't recommend a sports bike for London work! ;D
-
mines a 660 single thumper, its a town/country bike. it aint built for long haul. parking may not be an issue, I have free access to a underground car park for bike push bike, need to find out if I can put a motorbike there for free as well.
-
800 miles is a long haul. 80 miles...some folk have longer shoping runs ;)
Admitedly a Deauville will be less of a strain on the neck and upper body due to a fairing and is more suited to longer commutes and middle distance touring but your bike should cope just fine.
:y
-
its a naked bike so not a lot of protection, flat out it only does 105, but gets they feking fast! I am tempted to maybe try a couple runs. other problem is its tiny fuel tank, 110 miles to reserve.
-
Been doing 40 miles each way on the CG for the past 12 months (uni and back), aswell as many other runs in excess of 200miles each time...
Try it on the MT first, it might be ok :)
-
You'll find the going harder on a windy day, but on a calm day 80 miles will just stretch it's legs a little :y
-
i will make enquires at work, to see if i can park the motorbike in the carpark, there is space for them down there, no one currently puts one down there.
-
used to commute down the m40 from amersham to oxford every day on the 650 lightning!! and that had points ignition, was naked(no fairing not me) etc and had drum brakes!!! also did it on a victor 441cc single thumper when the lightning was poorly so you bike should be fine mate :y

Had to stop halfway to clean the plugs, adjust the points and valve clearances, replenish the oil that had leaked out and adjust the brakes, those were the days. :y :D ;D ;D
Sounds quite like Loo-Knees Fizzy :D ;D
-
Cheers mate, i might have to ring up the insurance company to add on commuting :y

I used to do 25 miles each way - until I got stopped, I did it in under 20 minutes, sports bikes are dangerous to you licence.

Most motorbikes you could lose your licence on. At the end of the day "They only go as fast as You want them too" :y

you forgot the gear lever vibrating off somewhere along the motorway,
leaving me screaming off at the sliprad hard on the brakes clutch in and trying to change down before i came to the stop!! then trying to join the traffic whilst stuck in top from a standstill >:(

You can park a bike almost anywhere....as for losing your license on one, bear this in mind.....
Having a numberplate that is so small it cannot be read = £30 fine and NO points.
Having a normal sized numberplate that can easily be read = £60 fine and THREE points.
Considering that all the real coppers have been replaced by camera's that are NOT capable of stopping you there & then for ANY offence that you MAY have committed, it's a real conumdrum as to what way to go ;)

Got to give either bike coppers or car the respect they deserve they can drive and certainly ride :y
-
my bike is all standard, full size normal number plate.
Fact i don't have to pay for parking is a bonus.
This would be my route...

I'd get a load more miles under your belt before considering that, particularly in London where you need to be far more defensive...

Most folk think that traffic cops are c*nts...I've never met a real bad one yet (and I've been tugged by a few in my younger days).
As for TB's comment about riding in London.....heed his advice on this occasion, because it's not just a different ball game, it's a whole new world.

Not sure your wording is right... but the coppers I have come across seemed to be sound too :y

Couple of test runs would help?
Figured since i am paying for the insurance on the bike anyway, might as well bump it up to commuter.
I could get my monthly commute costs down from £400 to £80 :o

take it into Oxford at rush hour a couple of times...

Be difficult to do, in London by that time!

Most are fine the only nasty bits of work were non traffic but in cars, and I have come across 4 of them >:(
1 nearly knocked me off - driving up my bum on a DC, another nearly ran into a lorry while I was filtering in traffic - trying to catch me as I clipped the end of a double white line, and other pair were total shits who tried entraping me.
Mr TPM on his R series BMW - fine no problem. Senator drivers, polite excellent drivers, no problem.
-
I will also mention that at the time there was a definate pick on bikers policy, a friend was told that as he was done for speeding despite lots of cars overtaking him. >:(

Don't tell us you were caught speeding on your GP 100 turbo ;D ;D ;D

Can't turbo 2 stroke petrols ::) You can port them though ;D
Actually I did get done for speeding on it - no complaint over the handling of that, but that was the bike I was riding when the pair screwed me around. Other two cases were on the 600 and I got a complaint in on the second - direct to a Traffic Officer (who AFAIK did have a word), my POS boss at the time stopped me complaining on the first as he automatically assumes all Police are above reproach whereas I knew only most are, I am afraid that nearly crashing into a lorry on a blind bend is bad driving - and the lorry driver having to emergency stop - I wanted that one done!
