"You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God,go!"
Oliver Cromwell 20th April 1653
Quoted by Leo Amery 7th May 1940 when addressing Neville Chamberlain.
Very fitting for the situation with Martin, Speaker of the House Of Commons, as the pressure has made him decide to step down this afternoon, the first time this has happened to a Speaker in 300 years.
Perhaps this is the start of the big Parliamentary 'clean up'that we seek, if we can trust the MPs to do it!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

Personally I wouldn`t believe ANYTHING that came from ANY politicians mouth. They`ve always been out to feather their own nests first and foremost. AND they have the front to call themselves public servants. . . . >:( >:( >:( >:(

But was pushed or did he go kicking and screaming ? I bet it was the latter .All he seemed interested in was his little golden handshake and trying to hand his son the chance to win his his parliamentry seat .Sorry that is not his right, that is up to his local members to decide that, but hopefully if and when gormless calls a election the electerate will turn on him and tell him to get lost and a few of the other selfserving pigs will be booted out on there arses.

He had brought disgrace to his high office for years, good riddance to the sleazy little crook.I just wonder if he will take Brown down with him,I,m sure he has the ammo to do it if he feels bitter and betrayed enough ;)
Whatever events unfold in the near future, this is the first step in the right direction in Westminster for a very long time, hopefully the trend will continue.

that's a shame - he had a really good chance of winning too ;D

i hope these MPs who are congratulating themselves on making the speaker quit don't think that they're off the hook with joe public - the'll be more blood on the house of commons floor before the weeks out
