Hi Guys, Fitting an 8.5Kw (cheapo Triton) shower for a mate`s mate. 15 metre pretty much straight run from consumer unit. Is 6mm cable gonna do or will I have to up it to 10mm. TIA
-
I'd suggest you go with the 10 mm wiring. I do not trust these thing on a 6 mm. The wires tend to heat a lot when in use IMO on the 6 mm. :-/

Would you like me to ask one of the builders who have been here 9 BLOODY DAYS fitting an electric shower in our house!! >:( >:( >:(
Supposed to be a 5 day job to convert shower room to a wet room type and to get the shower off the combi boiler onto its own power and water supply.
I could have done it quicker myself ;) ;) ;)

Yeah, I know all that mate, 45A MCB @ consumer unit, 30ma RCCB protecting the circuit and a 45A double pole isolating pull cord/switch. Just wondering whether the 6mm T/E will de-rate due to the cable run. :y

yea that sounds good to me mate but i would use 10mm T/E just to be on the safe side; and if you up grade your shower in the future you got the cable to take it good luck mate :y

That's double pole isolator with indication, and you need to be Part P for anything concerning a bathroom.
It's more than just cable length versus current drain when carrying out an installation.
Seriously, get a qualified sparks in.....because a mistake can see you in the dock for manslaughter if something tragic occurs.

House insurance - if not checked by person with right bit of paper (IEE) possibly invalid- or excuse to wriggle out. I think same applies to any wiring mod's to a house regardless as to how long you may have been ther e - aplgies for spelling but - crashed laptop a few days ago - so now on windows7 - whats wrong with win98B?

I wonder if there's a black market for half a cable of old colour red & black twin & earth like that in my shed? ::) ::) ::) ::) :y :y :y :y
-
I prefer brown, black, grey, but must admit x years ago got rid of some 2" asbestos tape which can't use in this country any more
-
Anything in a bathroom is 'special location' If you are not Part P registered and do not inform the 'building Regs' you are breaking the law.
Any accident and you have done manslaughter.
Apart from that 8.5kw = approx 34 amps. max for 6mm is 32 amps so you need 10mm.
I'm a qualified sparks and i wont do electric showers anymore. The bits and peices you need to make a safe circuit plus the labour invariably cost considerably more than the rubbish electric showers people go and buy from Wickes that pack up within a couple of years (especially in hard water areas)
If you can get a proper shower fitted off the hw system thats your best bet.
