Title: question about motor oil (a stupid one)
Post by: Don_Semo on 26 May 2009, 11:35:54
I've changed my omega's oil and the oil filter, and I've drained 3 and a half litters. And so putted in 3 and a half litters new oil, the measure stick show "max", but I'm not pretty sure. How much oil I have to put in it is my question. Its a X20XEV with one piece oil pan and an oil filter. I think I've read somewhere that in the engine must be 4 and a half litters. Sorry for the units, but we use litters here. Thanks.

Engine should hold 5 litres

you should have been able to drain more...

The 2.0 does not quite hold 5L, just under.

I usually fill the oil filter, put that on, and then fill the engine.

I am usually left with about 0.5L

In the EPC it says 4 and a half litters. So I have to put one more litter and everything will be ok. You are left with about 0.5L from 5 litters I guess. Thanks a lot.

Yes sorry thats from a 5L can.

Did you fill the oil filter first? If not, start it but only leave it running for a few seconds then turn it off and check the level, it will drop quite a bit.

I've driven it for a good 100 kilometers and the level is still at the "max" point. Yes, I've filled the filter first. But I think I have to put one more litter because I get the "oelmangel" text, (that I think means oil lack) from time to time.

Hummm  :-/

Firstly, yes you have excellent english  :y

I am still concerned you only drained 3.5L  :-/ :-/

The oil lack could be a sensor issue, that usually only comes on around half way on the dip stick.

What grade of oil did you use?

I've no idea about the previous oil. It's the first oil change after I bought it. I suppose that the person that previous owner putted in 3,5 litters, because he doesn't know how much to put in. Maybe that is the problem. But now I'm pretty sure that I have to put 4,5 litters. And end of problems. I am using GM oil 10w40.

Before draining oil did you check the level?
Engines consume oil so it doesn't even have to be a problem, cause maybe the old oil level was simply lower than maximum

What was the oil like was it thick or thinish

Before draining was at minimum. The oil was pretty thin.

another issue. The level stick says 1 litter between minimum and maxim. I've put one more litter as you say. Now the level stick show one litter more than the maximum with 4,5 litters. What to do now?

any idea?

NO, it sounds as if you have put too much in. With some engines there is a danger of the crankshaft hitting the oil surface (I think) which is not nice.  :'( When filling up a car, always fill to the dipstick level, not more. If it doesn't take as much as expected, then there must be a reason, a dent in the sump, perhaps the car was at an angle when draining and hence the sump was not empty, or something else. I would be inclined to try and get some out and then start up and drive for a day, then check the level again.

I wouldn't fill it past max on the dipstick.  Shame noone answered you on that earlier - you will need to drain about a litre out by the sounds of things.

If the level was min before draining, I would expect you to get about 3.5l out of it, as you did.

Could you have miscounted litres when refilling? - I know I have before.

But to be sure the oil level should be at max on the dipstick and no more.

Cheers
Ian

I've drained 1 litter, now the level is at the maximum. Still get the OELMANGEL text from time to time, absolutely no dents on the oil pan, everything is perfect, the car was straight (or leveled,I'm not shure about the word  :) ) while draining, I've no idea what to do. I'll take some pictures of the engine and will post them for you to see the engine, the oil pan, the dipstick, anything possible. I'll try to take the pictures tomorrow. Thanks a lot for your help.
