Title: Anyone fancy a Cambelt and Tensioner Party?
Post by: Darth Loo-knee on 09 February 2007, 17:09:31
I have at long last got an MV6....

I have bought this gorgeous car of Elite Pete who is a real genuine guy :y

Took my time driving home feeling like a million dollars, then took a picture for on here in the snow!

My question is to all you Guys who love Bacon and Egg Butties, Mugs of Tea or Coffee (even the odd Carling Premier) what is the chance of doing a Cambelt and Tensioner Party?
Who do I need to speak too TB? Laidback? Mark?

Cheers
Daz

Mate, get the DVD, PM Mark or Robinhood. It's £3, just to cover costs. The V6 cambelt change with this DVD is a peice of childs play....

These things kinda organise themselves.  Official approval not required, although not impossible to get some of them to come along.   :y

I'm very busy at the moment, so I couldn't make any arrangements to travel a long distance to help members out just yet...

But if you get the timing kit and waterpump and Aux belt in advance, and arrange loan of a V6 timing kit, AND are prepared to travel down to me (Or my girlfriends), then I would happily guide you through a cambelt change, IF, and only if, we could agree on a good date, which would have to be looked in to.

Don't rely on me if it's urgent though..it won't happen instantly. The next members I will be helping as a priority are TheBoy with his Rover cambelt, and STE with his gearbox selector.

If you decide to get it done by a garage, then make sure they have THE GM V6 TIMING SETTING KIT! You can't get it accurate without that.

If the timing belt kit is due now, then don't wait to get it done if you are going to continue driving it, find somewhere that will do it.

If I were you I would take the plunge with the DVD, it's really not a bad job.

As said abovem don't let a garage do it with a timing kit - they will insist they can, but they can't.

If you are prepared to travel, I will willingly lend a hand.

You will need the correct full cambelt kit, a water pump if not changed recently, coolant, and 6 plenum O rings if you have the extended 'droop snoop' plenum (certain on a retail MV6)

Thanks for your offers guys and advise, she is still standing where i left her after fetching from Elite Pete's. Cleaned her (calling her cause the kids have name her Ebony!) inside and had a look under the bonnet and being honest i think its beyond me to do it so She is booked in Greenhous's Vauxhall Main Dealer on wednesday. The Cambelt has little cracks in the rubber as though its perished so nice and easy on wednesday morning! I didn't think it was a bad price either but if i tell you guys you will probably laugh ;D

If you have stripped it down enough to even get a look at cambelt, you can do this job.  I suspect the dealer will make a half hearted job.  Ask Elite Pete about water pump - that may need doing as well.

Most importantly, ensure a full kit is put on, not just belt.

Haven't stripped anything off the car but can see the cambelt well what a thought was the cambelt, come to think of it i thought it was a strange cambelt as it doesn't seem to have teeth but more like grooves if that makes any sense..
I said what do you do for a Cambelt change, and i believe its easier to fit a water pump while everything is off??  and they said "yes, we will fit new cambelt and tensioners and pulley, fitting a new water pump and seal, then new water with anti freeze".
It that a full kit? hope so :-?

That is a new cambelt kit. :)

Also it sounds like you need a new aux belt. That will be the belt you were looking at. :)

The belt you are talking about is the aux drive belt - this drives the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air con compressor.  It is correctly called a "poly Vee" belt.  If there are visible cracks in the surface, then I would have this replaced at the same time.

From what you have described, this is a full kit i.e. the belt, tensioner and rollers.  This is exactly what I had done at a dealer.  To be sure, I asked to have the old parts as I always do and sure enough, the lot was changed.  In my case, it was a bit of a downer as the parts looked to be brand new, but I did not know when the belt or tensioner was last changed.

I hope that this helps.

Even after 40k, the backplate often looks new.  Besides, the idea is to change before any wear starts to show :y

Its a fiddly job and not hard if you have the DVD and right tools.

I will gladly lend you my timing kit and 30mm ring spanner.

All you need to do is either:

1) Drive down to me or,

2) Cover recorded special delivery for the tools (All in the timing kit and spanner cost me circa £75 pound)

If you are going to do the job then I would recommend you change the aux belt and water pump and seeing as you will have the plenum off you might as well bite the bullet and do plugs and leads (unless you know for certain they have been changed recently....by the way...any oil in the spark plug wells?)

I have the DVD and it doesn't really look too bad, I just don't have the confidence (or tools!) to do it myself and mine was due 1k ago  :o
I'd love to be able to do it myself with someone knowledgeable there watching, making sure I was doing it right.

Quoted £352 for the parts and fitting, i phoned Vauxhall to see how much the parts were if i did it myself and nearly came to £250 so for £100 quid thought i would let them do it :)

hmmm ... they'll have quoted you retail pricing then!

Trade club pricing would knock off about £100 of that price. However for your extra wedge you do have some comeback if it should go bang within the next 40k tho  :y

But bear in mind they won't necessarily get the timing spot-on as they work to a set time allowance, either Mark or Dave on here found that when they changed their belt, there was a flat spot before the change (last done by Vx) and none afterwards  :)

There MIGHT exist the potential for an Oxfordshire based Cam belt party... depending on who what where and available space....

My drive way is only 1 car wide... but it MIGHT fit up to 3 Omegas in a line on it....  with some shelter, and possibly, with some ingenuity and enough tarpaulin....  cover for 2 , maybe 2 and a half,  out of the three...

(i seem to be recalling that there are some legal issues with doing work on the pavement or road side unless it's an emergency...   so I'm only able to offer space on a distinctly sloping driveway....   (slope along it, not across it.. so Ramps and stands could level things out...  )

however, I'm not as fully equipped as some, nor as physically able...

Brain and ears work fine....  the rest is high mileage wear and tear, and accident damaged.

With enough people actually doing them, ie Me/M_DTM/Theolodian/others? we could actually get through a few, if we could get the space?

Well, My place is less than perfect... but I'm quite willing to volunteer it ...

even if it's on another occasion....  I have other Vx related jobs to be doing... like new front discs and calipers on the Sintra. which is also about due a Cam belt.... (same 3.0 V6 , transversely mounted)   so we could always do them,  amongst friends, as it were, on another occasion ....

I'm always quite willing to  have a party....  cam belts or no cam belt...    :D

Or perhaps.......  and this is just an idea....   maybe we could rent/hire a warehouse or vacant industrial unit  or something for a weekend.... collectively it might be cheap enough to make sense...  i have no idea... it just occurred to me... i haven't researched it...

I'm totally capable of changing Meega 2.0/2.2 and V6 cambelts, I'm happy to attend and help out, but won't need mine doing.
