Been feeling under the weather for a few days.
Woke up at 4am this morning with a face like a football - agony...
Went to dentist - nothing wrong dentally - go to GP.
Go to GP. Inspects face and asks me a few questions about my "male parts"... ::)
Turns out I have mumps - and due to where the pain is, I have a 75% chance of being infertile, as a result :'( :'( :'(
Gutted? Just a bit... :-[ But not prepared to worry until know for sure....
-
I hadit when I was about 4, so severe i beleive I am in a medical text book somewhere!
not good as you get older though, the sterile thing is a real risk :'(

The GP said he didn't fancy my chances much... :-[

guessing you would have to wait about 3 months before they will even check, will they do a check for you afterwards?
think of the saving on nodders ;D
-
Yep, they will check, once virus has cleared off....

Commiserations James. My girls gave me mumps when I was in my thirties having previously given me chickenpox which was bloody awful (off work 8 weeks, spots in every known body crevice, infected throat and frozen shoulder!!). Having mumps afterwards was a breeze compared to that!! Just a bit achey in the b***s department but quite bearable if you take something like soluble Solpadeine (paracetemol and codeine) which will also help the pains in the jaw and face. My own GP thought it was hilarious that I had got both of these complaints as an adult and said my Mum had protected me too well!!
Although there is a risk of infertility I did'nt think it was as high as your doc says. Permanent loss of fertility is rare, but up to a third of men who get this disease develop Mumps Orchitis,a consequence of which can be reduced formation of sperms (quote from a website). Keep away from any pregnant women though while you are infectious. Hope you soon feel better mate.

Sorry to hear that mate, hope you get better soon :y
-
Never had mumps, except the 2 I was born with ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
hope this makes you feel better,
among the few sexually mature men who contract mumps, only half get orchitis. Of these patients, only 10 per cent are affected in both testicles, and even then it does not necessarily cause sterility. If sterility occurs, there is still a chance that fertility may return. :y

I had mumps and the doc said I might not have kids. now I have three all girls and two are twins.
-
Talking to my 4 year old Grandson on Saturday who informed me that he had a 'jection against Bumps & Weasels :D
-
I had it when young.....and its a good reason for all kids to have the MMR!
Are you considering procreation in the near future then James, does Maria now? ;) ;D
-
Don't recall ever having it...the mumps that is :y

Certainly not on the agenda..... but it would be upsetting to lose the ability ::)

Better knock a few out into an ice cube tray quick then and get it in the freezer :y ;D ;D ::)
If you do though, remember its there next time you come in after a few drinks and fancy a gin and tonic
(apologies to all for lowering the tone of this)

I can recall what 'it' is.....but when you sit down and work it out, for a married man 'it' works out bloody expensive!

me and my brother had scarlet fever when we was young, i had it bad, smothered my whole body and was off for a month. it just cleared up then i had shingles for another 3 weeks. ;D ;D ;D
-
This is an odd illness. I don't actually feel that unwell..... just drained of strength!
I just lapped in and re-fitted my last 6 valves 'cos I was feeling bored, and it was all I could do to operate the spring compressor!

Had chickenpox when I was in my thirties. Worst I've ever felt in my life.
Felt so bad we called the doctor. He walked into the room and said "where's the patient", with me looking like the thing from the swamp in the only bed in the room! :-?
Make sure your children get all the chidhood illnesses before they become adults.
Hope you feel better soon. :y
