Title: LSD
Post by: Jim Bob2 on 14 February 2007, 19:02:31
I was wondering which models have an LSD and how stiff they are. Has anyone got any comments on them?

Would appear to be only ex-plod manuals....

Only ever seen them on ex-plods....(manuals or autos)....they are very good though...!

They were optional on retail manual MV6. I will check when I change the diff oil.

I stand slightly corrected - cheers Marks_DTM for the clarification :)

Any one wanting an lsd it might be worth keeping an eye open in breakers yards because I would think that alot of earlier plod cars will be reaching the end of there usable life by now but keep it under your hat when asking the breaker what your looking for cos the scrappy might charge a premium if they discover you after an lsd. Hopfully they will think its a standard diff

How do you tell if its LSD or not without dissmantling it ?

With great difficulty!  ;D

I was discussing this with Mark the other day.
Originally the diffs were stamped with a product code and the prefix of this code identified the type.

If the diff stamp had a 0 at the start it had a LSD.  :D

If the diff stamp had a 1 at the start it had a non LSD. :(

Alas, finding this stamping on the diff nowadays is highly unlikely as time seems to have worn it away!
Vx obviously saw no financial gain in riveting a stainless steel plate to the side of the diff for future identification purposes!

So in theory, if an MV6's history is unknown it could turn out to have an LSD. Would it possible to read the stamp number (if not worn away) with the diff in situ, i.e laying underneath with a wire brush and torch?

Never been able to read one yet....despite using a wire brush and emery.....

On most, given that they will have the original oil in them, its reasonable to assume that the slipper additive will be pretty buggered so you would notice a bit of drag as you cornered at slow speeds (i.e. turning out of a junction).

In theory, with one wheel on the ground and the gearbox in gear (or park) you should be able to turn the opposite wheel with a fair amount of force....

Also (I think) if you lift both rear wheels off the floor, and turn a wheel the opposite side should turn in the same direction. If it's an ordinary diff' the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction.

It looks as though the best way of getting a car with an LSD then it to buy an ex plod motor.
Are plod cars always shagged or are there good ones to be had ? I saw the one on E-bay and it would have been a good base for a project. I don't know what it made in the end but it was getting pricey last time I looked.

Tried it before and it doesn't. Only way I found out was through Vauxhall from the chassis number original build spec.

They are good though.

The only true way of checking whether the diff on an Omega is LSD or open  is to peer in the hole the driveshafts fit into, if you see crossed pins its LSD if you see a single pin its an open diff, hope that helps guys??

That doesn't work either.....the chassis number on my old estate showed no LSD....yet it had one (see maintenance guide for diff oil change)

I agree it is always possible for parts to be upgraded post build but I was certain I had one from the sideways drivability but need it confirmed for my own peace of mind in case I ever had to change it. The oil change is planned soon because it seems to be snatching a bit, either that or the tyres are not as grippy as they were but either way it's worthwhile doing.
