Are we following different sports?
I'm talking about the FIA Formula 1, you know, Ecclestone, Mosely, that spoilt brat Hamilton etc....
What are you referring to?

Used to love it,from 78 until 94,when Senna died, most of my interest has since disappeared.Thought it was at its absolute worst when the cheating German was dominant.

.....and Gilles villenueve, the last of the do or die generation, and of course they were all man enough to race at Brands Hatch,a proper racing circuit imo, unlike the soulless Silverstone whose only features are artificial rather like the adjacent Milton Keynes. :y

I like Brands. But for modern F1, it is entirely unsuitable. I mean, these gay playboys will use any excuse not to race properly, so at least give them a track there is at least a chance to overtake on (in an F1 car).
I think Donnington is a mistake, as to make it suitable for F1 will mean it losing all of its charm. Silverstone has been modified, for the worse imho, in an attempt to make it more F1 friendly.
That said, I don't care who has the British GP, as long as it isn't Silverstone. Main roads around here now closed for through traffic, many back roads are currently a big 1 way system, and are starting to get busy, and the rather helicopters have started >:(

My friend was phoned yesterday to say he had won all expenses vip tickets to Silverstone, the jammy sod

My brother beat that. 3 weeks ago he was at the GP circuit in Spain driving (himself) Formula 1 cars around the circuit (obviously after sending him round in F3 first for a few laps). Now that is 'Jammy Git' >:(

this could be the best thing for the sport, start a fresh and make it proper racing :)

not really bothered the real racers are a Assen, if the race is anything like the last one, then there should be some right fireworks between Rossi and Lorenzo :y :yWhat a move by Rossi on the last lap ,unbelievable

how the hell did he do that? nobody overtakes there :o.....did you notice the twitch from the bike just as he let off the brakes? :-/....Rossi and moto Gp make f1 look gay, except Jenson of course.
Such a shame tv kills the impresssion of speed that f1 cars generate, although some of this seasons coverage seems better in that reguard...

some obscure video of rossis last lap, only shows part of thr story, and some of tvs infuriating habbit of showing dim wits watching tv in thpits insread of whats going on on the track. WHY DO THEY DO THAT????

Dorna have pulled molst of the coverage from youtube due to copyright >:( >:(

All other motorsport formats are exciting, simply because overtaking is possible, even when it's virtually impossible (as in Rossi's case). Its just F1 thats dull.
Shame the FIA couldn't push through the idea that its the number of wins in the season that decides the championship, that would enforce proper racing for the spectators.

sorry TB, but a lot of the close racing in motorsports is contrived for spectacle - look at BTCC, GT3, etc - yes - very exciting, close races but thats because the cars are handicapped like race-horses to artificially generate similar performance in different cars. F1 is a purer form of racing - if you want a lot of overtaking, watch huge V8's thunder round an oval all day with the lead switching every few laps like NASCAR - to me the overtaking becomes meaningless and it soon becomes boring :o

And watching the same cars following each other lap after lap after lap for 90 mins is exciting?
BTCC's ballast does make it closer, and thus naturally more exciting.
F1 is far from pure racing - if it was, all technical restrictions would be lifted. I'm not saying thats the best thing of course.
F1 currently lacks any drivers with a real desire - they are happy to not take risks in a race, happy to just take points for the overall championship. That makes it poor for the paying spectators. Love him or lothe him, Schumacher was a fantastic ambassador for the sport by always trying 110% on the track. Senna, Prost, even Mansell were all true racers as well - if there was an opportunity, they would go for it..
Its not just the drivers, there is a technical restriction to overtaking - aerodynamics. This again needs to be drastically reduced in favour of mechanical grip (the move back to slicks this year is a start) - that would allow closer, more exciting racing, rather than the current 1-2s between each car. Now wouldn't that be more exciting - allowing them 1000bhp, but very limited downforce :D

F1 used to have plenty of overtaking until the areo boffins started designing cars which were at their least efficient when running close behind another car, this has been made much worse by the mickey mouse contrived "spectacle"of refuelling which allows theblokes in the pits with degrees in statistics to decide how to win races.
If the refuelling was banned they would find ways of overtaking again.
...anyone remember villenueve & Arnoux,Dijon 79? 8-)

there is another element to it. Tv coverage. Personaly i find watching an f1 car on the move fascinating and frustrating in equal measure due to Tv and camera positions and the annoying habit of zooming in as close as possible as cars round a bend. Great close up but its just a static car in the middle of the screen and blur in the back ground. Sensation of speed completely lost.
Having said that while watching it live now they show a head on shot of turn one now and then. The direction change looks very much like it would be physically painfull for the driver. Quite incredible, the shot just about shows it. But when the camera pans round and follows the car, instantly becomes "so what" viewing.
Having ridden almost the same circuit on a bike, (that poxy chicane by the pits for bikes, lufield is missed out) where its hard breaking and down 2 gears at turn one, to see an f1 car take it flat, sorry that aint boring. If they could get that across more....
Maggots first two corners are also being taken flat out, Tv really doesnt do it justice. Weather you know the circuit or not.

As its just down the road from me, I do tend to go to the free test days with colleagues from work, then back to my place for bbq and beer. So I know exactly how they can get around quickly. I have also had the pleasure of taking my own car I had at the time around the circuit. I've also been in a race in bog standard road cars around the original circuit, before they had security there ::)
But watching cars follow each other, no matter how fast, is boring, and not racing.
Now go to Silverstone to watch the amateur series, it doesn't matter how slow the cars are, its exciting, as everyone is there to race rather than play percentages for a year long championship. And when you get racing, you get the full range of sensational thrills and heart stopping spills. Thats exciting.
