Title: A sight you don't want to see!
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 22 June 2009, 12:44:13
Just falling asleep last night at 2300 and I smelt this really heavy sooty smell.  Looked out of my bedroom window and there was thick smoke everywhere.  I thought immediately that someone had set somebins alight as they tend to do frequently around here.

Anyway heard a commotion from a number of people alongside our block of flats, so looked out of my kitchen window that faces an oppositite block of flats.  As I did so a mass of flame started shooting out of a 1st floor flat's main lounge windows, and going up the side of the building! :o :o :o :o :o

It seemed like an age before the fire service, and all the rest, turned up so the fire got a good hold.  Anyway, thank God, the fire was eventually put out but not before half the flat had been gutted by fire, with the flat above affected by flame and heat damage to their windows, with the flat below soaked with water. :'( :'( :'(

From what I hear locally so far, everyone got out ok and no one was seriously hurt. 8-) 8-)

It makes you think, and double check the heat detectors we have installed as that could happen to any of us!  In fact last year a house next to my daughters was gutted by fire, with the occupants very lucky to escape, so these things happen all too frequently. :'( :'( :'(

It is indeed a sight that never should fall upon our eyes Ms Zoom. :(

Thank goodness for the fire fighters who risk their lives on a daily basis to ensure that when these unfortunate things do occur, any potential injury to the person is kept to the minimum. :y :y

I always want to hand a few foil wrapped potatoes to the firemen in such scenarios whilst saying 'can you pop those on for me'

Well there is a story to that Webby!! ::) ::)

I tried to take four shots of the flames with my 'new' digital camera. As I snapped away the smoke was so thick coming towards me that I could not open the kitchen window so took them through the glass.  When I looked at them this morning all I had was a picture of thick smoke, reflection of the flash in the glass, and a tiny flame!! ::) ::)  Not newsworthy quality I thought! ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;)

That reminds me of a night out in Torquay some years ago. I had decided that I would sleep in my car in a quiet back street once I had emerged from clubbing. Not long after I had gone to sleep I was awoken by a crackling sound and black floaty things landing on my car. It was hot embers from a nearby hotel which had caught fire! I was soon surrounded by firefighting equipment and peopel running about, so I tucked myself under my duvet, kept my head down and hoped nobdy would notice that I was camping out. Fortunately nobody did, otherwise I might have been arrested as one of the suspected arsonists.

I found out later that it was a derelict hotel that was regularly set on fire by vandals. Trust me to sleep right next to it! It's a wonder I wasn't burnt alive along with my trusty Carlton!

All 3 people were rushed to hospital Lizzie, anyway on another note do people seriously set fire to bins near you? I'm just round the corner and it's so quiet round here nothing ever happens like that  :o

That's interesting, because the one ambulance that turned up stayed there for ages, and I had watched the scene from before the emergency services turned up. :-/ :-/

However, yes indeed that particular block of flats had their bulk bins set alight just last week, and we had the same two months ago, with our rubbish shoot becoming a chimney! :o :o :o  Since I have lived here (6 years) we have had bin,car and garage fires. :'( :'( :'(

Well if you can find me a house with garden that I can exchange with........... ;D ;D ;D ;D 8-) 8-)  But actually I love the view from my flat as I can see so much of what is going on and I have great neighbours, thank God!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

As for the fire look at this Kentish Express report of it I have found online.

http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentish_express/news/2009/june/22/man_taken_to_hospital_in_blaze.aspx

It is amazing how the press 'build' a story! "Half of the building, containing six flats, was severely damaged by fire". My arse!!

Half of the building was not severely damaged, and the block actually consists of 24 flats not the 6 they quote! :o :o :o :o ::) ::) ::) ::)

Bloody exaggerating, dramatists!! ::) ::) :D :D ;)
