Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians and chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK, said: "This study is a global wake-up call.
"We need an international framework convention for alcohol control, similar to that on tobacco, as soon as possible, to put into practice the evidence-based measures needed to reduce alcohol-related harm.
"These include increasing the price of alcohol, reducing its availability and banning advertising, and the action needs to start now."

I read about the prohibition - basically caused by the nutters who left Europe because it was too tolerant

I am peed off by the incessant coverage as well - haven't had this madness since LDS.
Also prohibition now means that the big US brewers can only produce gnats pee.

The Conservatives who should form the next Government believe in a relaxation of state control and interference, so all these suggested schemes will be allowed to die a natural death. They know that the country cannot afford to reduce the tremendous tax revenues that are derived from tobacco and alcohol sales! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Again another struggle between the have's and have not's.
Are you aware that pre the victorians there was no such thing as porongraphy !! it was deemed by the victorians that the have not's where not intelligent enough to deal with erotica and so it was sidelined for the have not's. Now they are trying to do the same with tobacco. That done they move on to alcohol. And if they could, transport will go the same way. The have not's on public transport the have's in car's.
You see this is my communist side coming out now.
Amazing I can be a fascist on some subects and communist on others. Does that make me a liberal, ha ha ha.

Sorry MH, but yes there was, as pornography is as old as humankind itself, but certainly known to exist in ancient Greece. The question is what is pornography? To various races and religions sexual depiction can be viewed either as totally acceptable, or unacceptable and known as being pornographic. It is still individual perception, interpretation, or objectivity that rules on the final definition of whether something is pornographic or not. That is why there have been such famous legal cases or discussions in modern times such as that surrounding Lady Chatterley's Lover , Ulysses, or many earlier 17th, 18th and 19th century publications. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I have been banging on about this for ages, frequently suggesting before the smoking ban that I was against it (even though a non smoker), as the next logical step would be banning drinking in pubs.
You could argue that 'controlling' drinking via landlords etc is better than sending it behind closed doors. I think there is a similar argument on legalising brothels.
