Title: Power Cuts Imminent –Generators at the Ready
Post by: miked on 15 February 2007, 21:01:02
OK, title in the style of Mr Mc. Burger thread but...

I didn't realise we had had a referendum about nuclear power :o

That’s not what the post is about though.

Stay with me...

Went to Drax power station today..

Will come on to that subject shortly,

Hire car - 1.8i SRi Vectra

Ohhhh...   Myyy...   Goddd...

First one I have driven/been in.

Not nice

Cabin layout - poor

Equipment level - poor

Build Quality - poor

Those indicators - whats that about?

Tyre noise at 70+  :o

Engine drumming noise at 3.5 rpm -  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Set off at 6:30am (with a cappuccino from a local garage).  Managed to get there in one go.

Left at 16:30, had to stop an hour later, just to stop the car and turn the engine off...

How can they have gone from the Omega (I have had two) and from the Vectra (I had one) to this thing???
It its the first time I have had been in / driven a new style Vectra, normally get Volvos/ BMs and Saabs (what a nice car by the way)

So surprised.

Any way, I'm going to need names and addresses very shortly.   Will post soon...

Took me while but once I'd got used to them I actually prefer them.........

Don't get me started on nuclear power

****** backwards greenies >:(

Many new cars have lane changing indicators now. Quite good when you get used to them...

I've only done 2x98 miles.. But I was struggling with them.   It was the road and engine noise that really got to me though.

As for those xxxxxxx greenies...

I have no problem with a public referendum, really I don’t, really, I mean it... (but nuclear is the only long term option!!!!!!!!!!!)

Looking through other posts of mine, one would realise how fragile our power industry is.  I guarantee that those 'green activists' are currently sat in their comfort of their own homes, watching their televisions etc.  I would have a lot more time for them if they were a little more up to speed with reality.

As for those indicators...   :o  It must take practice...  but I still think their crap

Nuclear is the only viable option on the table.....we ahev no choice.

It does make me chuckle when I think of the cross channel link bring in 2GW of nuclear generated power to the UK (Sellindge).....and the greenies know nothing about it!

Did some work on that in the 90's...here's an aerial shot of the UK end of this monster DC link....

Aerial View (http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=608500&Y=138000&width=700&height=400&gride=610000&gridn=138000&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=&pc=&zm=0&scale=10000&multimap.x=317&multimap.y=122)

I agree - the 'renewables' that greenpeace want, many others don't due to noise/landscape etc type issues. Also, not convinced they can provide enough power...

Nuclear does seem to be the greenest of the options for generating large amounts of tizzy, though obvious worries of accidents/terrorism etc...

Can't see tizzy usage dropping much any time soon.

Nuclear is indeed the only viable solution for large scale power distribution at this time.

Nuclear fission is a very inefficient way of doing the job though (lots of nasty radiation as a by product!).
Once we can harness the massive amounts of energy released in a fusion reaction we, as a race will take a huge step forward in development (or we will be :-Xed)!

I don't believe they have fusion working yet without putting massive amounts of energy in...

They dont....its probably close to 20 years away....they can get a reaction started but, cant get the spent fuel out and the new stuff in so it just fizzles out after a few seconds.

But.... the energy released in those few seconds is massive!

As a technology, it is still a way off, but it will probably be the single largest step forward in recorded history when we do get it right.

It is something that interests me (it is the power source for stars and I have a sad interest in Astrophysics).  :-[
However the stellar form of nuclear fusion is rather different to what we can produce...

If only they could get fusion (joining of the atom) and fission (splitting of the atom) working together, there are possibilities for limitless energy. Of course, that would then defy one of the key rules of physics....

Ye canny change the laws of physics Captain. ;D

Belive me, if we can sort nuclear fusion, energy no longer becomes an issue...  :)

And yes you can change the laws of physics, it's called quantum mechanics!  ;)

LOL, yes, if physics stops working, blame it on QM...

I think even QM would have problems with getting more out than is availble...
