Don't worry Mark, I have found this info on the Class 52 Western's:
"The Western locomotive has two 65 litre Maybach MD 655 diesel engines each driving a Voith hydraulic transmission, which turn the wheels via a gearbox. The cylinders are arranged in a V formation driving a common crankshaft. The Maybach diesel engine has 12 cylinders and produces 1380 hp at 1,500 rpm. Maybach diesel engines were also used in marine installations such as motor torpedo boats and fishing boats."

6 valves per cylinder
crank journals are so big crank can be slid out. Bearings are huge

The 52s come off power at quite a low speed compared to the large EE devices, so at high speed the best type 4 was the 50.
However the 52 is sure footed, but does have a hole in its power going from 1st to 2nd

Interesting Martin, and they certainly sounded good when I was a child, with them hauling the Torbay Express that I was on once, along with Warships that did the same in the early 1960s. :-* :-* :y
I did miss the Halls and Castles though when these 'boxes on wheels' came along :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Nope, they were warships.....the Mekydro transmissions for the more powerful westerns would not fit in the uk loading gauge hence voith ones were used

Mekhydro is a 4 speed auto, used in Hymeks and some Warships
Westerns and the rest of the Warships use a multi torque converter system, which empty and fill at different speeds.

OOPS, you're indeed correct Mark!
In fact, our entire 'Valleys' fleet of DMU rolling-stock has Voith 'turbo-transmissions'. Bloody reliable too, especially considering the thrashing they get on our services - 17 stops between Cardiff and my home depot at Treherbert alone - in a scheduled journey time of 64 minutes. I've not heard of one failure in 11 years!
I'm quite a fan of the class 150/2 Sprinter - 14-litre Cummins with Voith is an excellent combination. Total route availability too.

Well, yesterday I was at East lancs to support 47292 in the hope of a good day with some cab rides etc.
Anyway, when 47292 arrived after her jaunt up the mainline, there was a major coolant loss problem!
I arrived in Bury at 8.30am (after a 2hr drive) where we inspected the coolant group on her.
Sadly, this was all ok!
So, we removed a few elements and could see water pouring off the bottom of the header tank!
At which point it was out with the header tank which involves removing many hard to get at internal pipes, extracting some vent pipes which were all seized solid and then craning the bloody thing off!
At which point we could then clean up all the gasket mating surfaces, re-tap some of the holes, replace some damaged pipes and re-fit the whole lump.
By which time it was 8.00pm
So the only part of the East Lancs railway I saw was the diesel shed.
There was also an issue with the Western, the delight that is the twin engine voith based traction system threw a wobbly.
The gearboxes on this have just been re-built by Voith at a cost of 38K each....anyway, they had a little issue which brough the old girl to a halt (simply put, one end was trying to go forwards whilst the other was trying to go back!).
So, that was also looked at by the Western team (using my tools etc).
It was nice to have a good close look at a running Western and get a full walk through. They certainly have a nice diesel pre-heat setup!
I got home at 1.30am this morning..........thankfuly having got some what cleaned up because I looked as filthy as Clarkson did last wee when he arrived in Edinburgh having spent the day on Tornado!

Ah yes, the Llangollen diesel group, that one has ETH fit.
They are about to move the class 46 away from Llangollen......and there are a few possible destinations.....and there is one particular one I hope it goes to.

Indeed Debs a lovely looking loco for a diesel, and I noted 47292 at Bristol Temple Meads during the summer of 1986. Sorry that I do not posses the exact date, but I am not an anorak on diesels!! :D :D :D ;)
