Nine British soldiers have been lost in nine days during fighting in Afghanistan fighting against terrorism and our safety today and in the future.
Regardless of any political argument, lets remember them with an old song which I think is fitting.

In my opinion Afghanistan is a real swamp.. :(
and definitely a very bad and unsafe place for Christians :-/
history prooved that..
feel sorry for those soldiers :-/
-
And time zone for this area is definitely showing 200 years ago (only weapons are new) ..but very poor and uneducated people..
so many bad things can happen.. :-/

The government needs to do more to arm and protect our armed forces.
They are all currently fighting with one arm metaphorically tied behind their back, IMHO. >:(

We all should feel moved when such dreadful events occur, the following by W H Auden speaks of the grief that only those so intimately involved can experience;

Couldnt agree more, its an absolute rather disgrace.Brown should be hung for the hypocrisy he shows regarding the armed forces. >:( >:(
I just hope its worth it in the end,the soviet union tried and failed in Afghanistan,as have quite a few others over the centuries.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

5 killed in a i.e.d. explosion
at the end of the day, there is 2 things about this situation that really p*sses me off.
1/. N.A.T.O. the lads out there are all under the command of nato. how many countrys are in nato ?
and why are there troops not in the fields getting there hands dirty with our lads ? i know for a fact that the germans have helicopters out there but are not allowed to fly into a combat zone and have been stoped flying at night because it dangerous !!
2/. under funding. why does this country seem to think that we have to do nato's dirty work with sub standard equipment while the rest of europe sits back and laughs at us while greatfully taking god knows how many million pounds everyday ?

The Ministry of Defence says five more British soldiers have died in Afghanistan, taking the total number of deaths announced on Friday to eight.
The five, from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, were killed near Sangin, Helmand province, on Friday morning. Next of kin have been informed.
Their deaths takes the number killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 184 - more than those killed in the Iraq war.
UK forces are engaged in an offensive in Helmand with US and Afghan troops.
The five soldiers were killed in two separate blasts while on the same patrol.
Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "While there are no words to ease their loss, our heartfelt sympathies go to their families, friends and fellow soldiers at this very difficult time: their deaths were not in vain."
Earlier on Friday, it was confirmed a British soldier from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment died near Nad Ali in Helmand. That news came hours after the deaths of another two soldiers, again in Helmand.
Fifteen soldiers have died in 10 days in southern Afghanistan.
RIP

The same Dr. Reid who said that the Afghan situation could be resolved without a shot being fired?
what a rather idiot. >:(

....because we're governed by a bunch of self-serving, party political, money grabbing, gutless, indolent and generally useless gits who, by dint of sharp practice, have ever had the misfortune to plant their arses with such indecent firmness on the seat of government.

are a man who thinks like me :y
could not agree more with you there mate.
my cousin is out there at the moment working with the royal marines and tells me that there is so much discontent in the ranks about this its unbeliveable >:(
the officers all toe the party line in public but in private, they feel just the same way.
but at the end of the day, when you take the queens shilling, you do as you are told >:(

RIP to the fallen :'(
On everything else :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :(

Hate to say it, we havent learnt anything from history ,we tried in the 19th century to enforce our will and it cost thousands of soldiers lives .The russians lost countless troops trying and now we think we can do it again.RIP the brave soldiers who served with distinction and honour, which is more than can be said off the majority of our political masters.

Generally I am in agreement with the government of the day making sound decisions to send our lads (with proper equipment) to fight the good fight however....
I cannot help but wonder if we readily get involved in armed conflict at the drop of the hat in order to promote sales of our profitable arms businesses and the horrible losses of life are sadly just a callous reality of a marketing exercise.
I also wonder if anyone has actually got a set of objectives and an exit strategy for Afghanistan. Maybe the same fag packet used for Iraq.
Finally if it isn't all about making money from arms sales then i wish to god that Britain drew its horns in and agreed to send "our share only" to any agreed conflict. By share the same as any other country in NATO or EU or whatever. We could become a wealthy country again if we spent less on arms

........that would be well put to Dr Reid, varche - I don't think we would receive a convincing answer however.
Your points are well reasoned and for the most part I agree with you, but my view rests on the culpability of our dear departed Leader Blair, preening his vanity to seek a seat at the top table by unnecessarily associating this country with the rather dubious intentions of the then US administration.
History especially that of Afghanistan, seems to have been side-stepped and disregarded in the myopic desire to engage in hostilities.
