I went to a village fair recently, and the local garage owner was displaying some of his car collection, including this.

God those old cars are so small.
-
Wasn't the Tiger meant to compete against the Escort Mexico ,but was as popular .There's not many left now i cant remember the exact number single figure ??????
-
My mate took me out for a spin in his years ago, Bet he wished he still had it.
-
Those performance figures are not exactly staggering are they? 105mph, 0-60 in 8.9secs?
It's a bit of a disgrace being in the same picture as an Impreza.
-
Bloody fantastic performance in it's day though, from a 1500.
37 years old, I bet the Impreza wont grow that old.
-
Brings back memories, my first car was an Avenger 1500 - unfortunately the DL version rather than the Tiger, and a white 2 door. Went OK though, but needed 2 bags of sand in the read footwells to stop the steering going earily light at around 60 mph. The sand raised it to around 75mph.....
Could be a bit unnerving when overtaking.....
-
Mate of mine had a tiger. Brings back memories.
Kevin
-
Same mate who had the tiger had a couple of other interesting cars one of which was a 1750 holbay Hunter, that was a really nice motor

What happened?
Did a White Hunter shoot it? ;D
-
Nice car - as to performance - interesting cams make it faster.
I personally like the 2.2 hatch version - now that was quick!
-
That really is a rare beast nowadays( if "beast" is the right word!

A mate of mine had a VX 2.3 Magnum a couple of 3x2 paving flags in the boot really helped the back not overtaking the front on a tight bend in the wet, without them was rather "tail happy" :o

I would love to have that parked on my drive, lovely... :y :y

I had a 1600 and I thought it looked nice.
However that one is probably the best hot hatch ever.
0-60 in 6.5 seconds in 1980, in gear performance better than a Porsche with the same number as that Avenger based hatches engine (911).

Indeed Skruntie, and it has made me consider what a difference the fitting of an injection system, in place of the carburetor, would have made to the excelleration figure? :-/ :-/
Has anyone converted an old car from carburetor to injection and measured the difference it has made to the performance figures?? :-? :-?

My mum had an estate - 1300 but the engine blew up, I found a 1600 in a scrap yard (GLS - so 1.75" carb and 80bhp) it went well afterwards, as both an XR3i and a 2.0 Capri would be able to testify ;D

I would have done my Sunbeam but rot got to it.
Not too much I expect as one carb option was 2 x Weber 40DCOEs so powre not much difference but emmisions - room for big improvements
-
I have also seen the factory built Avenger 2.2 16v estate - a real sleeper ;D ;D ;D ;D

Who said the Lotus Sunbeam is ugly? A pox on you heathen of no taste or culture. You should bow your head in shame. In 1972 the Tigers 0-60 was pretty quick, remember a manual 3.0 Mig does'nt do it alot quicker, 7.5 / 8 secs.?
Reminds me of my 1500DL Avenger or Scavengers as we called 'em. I was only 18, it was blue, had the long speedo & a tiny steering wheel. It's reg was XTA something K. I was banned at the time so won't elaborate but spent some of my "formative years" in that car & it never let me down. Nostalgia! 8-)

I love the look of the tiger and its not like you see anything like it now so it will turn heads....Nice clean classic. :y :y

100% Agreed matey!!! :y

Was'nt it 1725? Sorry to be pedantic. :y
-
This talk of the 1725 Rootes engine brings back memories.
In that era we owned a 1725cc Singer Vogue in a deep
midnight blue. It wasn't a particularly fast car to drive,
but at that time the 'Car de Jour' was a MK2 Cortina
in Blue Mink. :P
So we felt like we were driving around in a mini-palace
in comparison. We took that car touring everywhere,
the only faults we ever got was a failed alternator diode
pack and a disbonded engine mount that gave us axle
tramp due to the live rear axle set-up.

Oh happy days! :)

May well of been. But could have been bored out.
I was easily impressed as a teenager when I went out in it.
he was a bugger for modifying, I know this had twin 40's on it so I dont even know if they were standard.

And what do you think a Sunbeam is?
The Sunbeam Ti is basically a hatch Avenger Tiger
A Sunbeam is an Avenger with AFAIR 3" or 9" removed in wheel base, mechanically identical, interiors used same parts, some body panel interchangability.
My Sunbeam had many Avenger parts on it from the scrap yard - early 1500 close ratio box, radiator was Avenger.
Only mechanical differences apart from no 2.2 saloon and no 1.0 Avenger is that the prop shaft is shorter on the hatch.

The 1725 was not a bad lump, but the later design Avenger lump was more tunable as it was a very short stroke design. I have seen an Avenger 1600 which put out over 200bhp at the rear wheels (on nitrous), a 1600cc circuit racing Sunbeam with 150 at the wheels, and with the 2.2 a hill climb Sunbeam with around 300bhp at lowish RPM after raiding an Esprit for its turbo and intercooler.
My old one was about 115 at the crank but was RRed at 90 at the rear wheels - and due to finances I had old Avenger GT Stromberg carbs on it.

Not of the Hillman variety it is not.
The Sunbeam is not a shortened Avenger, They came about when Hillman became Chrysler and took over Simca. They were all much the same inside and out, Alpine (Simca) 1301, 1501, Avenger, Sunbeam and Rancho all shared the interior common across the range.
-
Hillman Avenger became Chrysler Avenger (same car different badge).Sunbeam was an Avenger under its hatchback skin, same(shortened)floorpan and all mechanicals, apart from the lotus which obviously had different mechanicals. :y
-
Some of you are getting mixed up here.
The Talbot Sunbeam was the shortened 3 dr hatchback RWD version of the Avenger from1.0 up to the 2.2 Lotus.
The Simca variants were Talbot Horizons/ Alpines/ Solaras FWD awfull rattly buckets of shite that no manufacturer wanted to own up to hence so many names!!! But lets not confuse the two please. ::)

Avneger and Sunbeam are basically the same cars, the rest were French shite

How do you get attacked by a Sunbeam owner?
"Why do you own a Horizon?"
