There youve done it now..you touched a nerve.
Why do you boldly proclaim Linux to be the produce of an arse?
I,ve been using it for about 8 years,no anti-virus protection and I haven't been bitten once!
It does have some failings I agree, but less so than Windows. Biggest gripe is on the hardware side because Microsoft stitched things up with the manufacturers--wouldnt be nice if Vauxhall made it so that their cars only ran on Dunlop tyres because the wheels were square and welded on.
Penguins forever,Linux users unite and let us be Revolting. :)
Too be more serious, anyone wants to try Linux then I heartily reccomend Mint.

Yes, TB will no doubt respond!! :o :o :o :D :D

My last boss used all Microsoft products. They all worked seamlessly (almost ::)) with each other.
Then he for some reason decided to switch all of his servers over to Linux :-/
For weeks the techs tried to get the things running as smoothly as before. It never happened.
Back to Microsoft we went. Seamlessly ;) ;)

We could sell tickets for this one. ;D

That is a common misconception about Linux or any other non-MS OS. Virii exist for all common OSes.
The advantages *nix have is they strongly encourage you to never run as superuser, thus (OS flaws aside) anything you run in theory cannot cause OS issues. Microsoft have been pushing the same idea since the release of NT back in 92, but once 9x and NT lines merged with XP, many home users consider it a slur on their penile size to run as anything but Administrator. Hence the UAC built into Vista and later to overcome this.
Running without AV is an appallingly bad thing to do, and I strongly urge you to install some protection.
Now I work as a 3rd line support techie with several flavours of Unix (and Windows), each with its advantages and disadvantages. Linux advantages are quick development cycle, and it runs on cheap hardware. Disadvanatges are poor resource management and reliability. In the server arena, cost is another disadvantage. Linux's biggest advantage, and to be honest probably its saviour, is it will run reasonably well as a virtual server under the 2 most popular enterprise virtualisation systems - VMWare's ESX and Microsoft's Hyper-V
Linux has it's place (somewhere!), but its sure as hell not on a general purpose desktop. Or on most servers. It has carved out a nice niche for itself on web hosting servers due to low cost hardware, and the power of the Apache web server software.

Told ya. :D ;D ;D

Ah glasshopper, you must follow the way of the Penguin! :-*
Seriously though; I have a little Linux program that runs the Tv-card in my PC (without Windoze being booted): so I might simply use the PC monitor as a Tv......The simple Linux program is compact, stable and quick to load; unlike my M.S O/S. ::)

implementing everything which is ready and already solved before in windows environment as a lonesome cowboy not my cup of taste..
so as a programmer, left unix and its numerous derivates behind many years ago.. and never looked back ..

I wonder what makes so many people say the same thing ... ::)

I knew if I waved my little twig TheLad would come out waving his 6 foot length of 2x4 ;D.
I dont know enough about commercial(server) side of things but I do know that I have never looked back since dropping MS at home.
I have recently sorted out several (more than one..) Laptops/pc's for work friends, that were completely trashed for one reason or another. Some have been back for more, but the chap who accepted Linux instead is still happily tapping away and 'surfing' (hate that word). He can even update his iPod and talk to his Mobile phone.
I know all this can be done with MS,but he has less of a threat from virus and trojans, things in his emails dont go bang! etc.

Oh! Did I miss the fireworks?
I have to agree that Linux is far better than anything that MS ever produced. Trouble is there aren't quite enough apps around to do all you want on one box.
My view is that MS have done immeasurable harm to the development of both home and business computing by pursuing profit rather than functionality.

only if he runs AV software on his Linux ;)

Linux rules OK :y :y :y
Yes agree run A/V software on Linux (or any other o/s!) or you may be hit eventually.
Linux fast becoming as user friendly as MS Windows - try Ubuntu.
Not bloatware and not as resource hungry as MS products!
Remember running Office software (Spreadsheet, Wordprocessor, Database, Graphics package on Commordore 64 with 64K (yes K!!) memory!)
Apps now as good as or better than ms - Open Office, Gimp etc etc.
Linux also very useful in repairing breaked up Windows installations!!, resetting passwords and Windows registry and restore point repairs. ;) Better than Windows for that!!
Linux has its place.
Guess though Windows7 will revitalise MS - The operating system cr*p Vista should have been - Vista=Windows ME, both crap!

Linux (and all Unix for that matter) has a fundamental flaw as a desktop OS - X11. X11, although powerful, and a half decent idea, is too layered to ever be as fast as a monolithic desktop (assuming same local functionality).
There is no need to fit an office app into 64k (or 48k if you had a sinclair ;)) any more. Build in useful functionality and ease of use. MS-Office has to cater for everyone, rather than just the majority, so does need more features than the competition. I'm not saying Office is the best, but its certainly one of the best, and as my licences cost me £20 a pop, I am happy to use it instead of the competition. Open Office would be a contender if I couldn't get Office at a good price, but lacks a few features that I use. Also, the startup time of Open Office is too slow.
I don't understand the reluctance to Vista. What is wrong with it? Yes, its not perfect, but far more usable and secure than XP. I suspect the majority of people saying 'its crap' are those who cannot handle the changes, and give up on it too early. When the original previews came out (I had access to early, pre beta builds), I too struggled to 'get' Vista, until one day (around the first or 2nd beta) it clicked :y. Used it ever since at home. Stuck on XP as my desktop at work, though due to job, obviously have to play around W2K (still!), W2K3, W2K8, KDE, Gnome, CDE, Java Desktop and Citrix which I support.
Linux does have a niche. There are now plenty of better tools than Linux for fixing passwords and other registery issues, based around a more familiar (to most users) PE, so thats not one of them.
Throw enough resources at Linux, and leave the X11 stuff on the DVD, Linux can perform well - I look after a Linux DNS farm that handles in excess of 160,000 queries per second, and has the capability to handle double that. Then look at the OOF server, a fairly simple, small web server, and you can really see its resource management limitations.
So Linux's niche is probably around webhosting sites that need unix style technologies, without the cost, scalability and stability of a proper unix.
