My Gaffer has just repo'd a pair of 530bhp 04 plate units, half leather, walnut dash, HUGE cabs etc. Being stored in the yard, gaffer can buy them but wants to pay less than the outstanding finance arguing if they go to auction they'll make even less etc etc.
I'm hoping a strikes a deal (he usually does 'coz i'm down for one if he does!!!! 8-)

nice motors they are, mate of mine has one and he had a Fh12 for years and said to me he woundn't go back to volvo after having a daf :y :y :y
-
great trucks!!! must admit no matter what i drive these days the daf always seems to be that bit better, however its nowe got to the stage where i wont drive a merc!! they are bloody awful!!
-
Daf is not bad would rather frive the mega space Daf though. I prefer MAN the Tga 560 xxL that was also my last Truck. good to drive and very comfy with loads of room.
-
I know they are not highly regarded by some but i really liked drived the Strallis, loads of oomph, good cab and comfy seats,
only real fault is the fuel consumption isnt to good ad i dont pay for that!! ;D
-
worked for daf for 9yrs as spark. much prefer daf to volvo to work on. astronic box is gettin more popular now and a lot of drivers say wouldent go back to stick. digital tacho as them stumped now [smiley=thumbsup.gif], new 105 has a bigger cab inside.

Currently driving an FH12 CD Globy which i'm happy with but's getting a bit tired & only a 420. Never tried the Stralis or Actross, don't fancy an auto. The MAN TGA's are a good truck, lot's of room/storage & i love the 3rd button easy shift, you can even pre select a split & hit the switch with your thumb when you need it & away you go.
The two XF's in question are 04 plates but still have card tachos, i don't hold a digi card (yet)
-
You can have mine if you want guy..... ::) ::) I`ve never bloody used he damn digi card i left comet before they got their new fleet....
-
mans have a bad dealer over here, crap back up so they havent that many over here, do agree that ther no worse than any other now. i dont like the v2 volvos, the v1 fm etc were a reailable truck if a good driver on them. could tell you a lot of stoies bout the digi tach as im still a calibrater but my card is still at my last employer. they where put out to quickly so where'nt exactly right first time. also be careful with the card as its easily damaged/wiped.

Getting a bit posh ::) I like Auto, never ever got to grips with all these gears and splitters :-[ managed over the years but lots of crunching here and there.
Passed my HGV test in 1978 a 1965 Commer with 5 speed crash, the following week my PSV in a 1963 Bedford Duple, again crash gearbox......... ::)
Both with the same driving school......... :y :y :y

Learned the ropes in a 1966 Foden rigid with a crash box on the fairs when i was 18!!!! ::)

I don't go down the road any more, but if I did, the XF is the best cab. I don't miss the job one bit to be honest. ::)

Wow!! You're only in Meggies. I agree it's not the best of jobs but it's all i know. I'm 46 now & started on vans/7.5 tonners in my teens, have no other trade so that's me i guess.
Beats working for a living! :y

As youve heard I used to live in germany, and I am a long distance Truck driver Artics only dont like wagon and drag.
Ive done a hell of a lot of miles in my shortish life upto now. Ive been in every country that europe has to offer bar 2. even driven in a lot of the east european countrys,
Personaly for long distance ie 800 / 900 klm per day like I used to do, is the automatic good and for going up hills and in citys or towns were you have to look in the map to find out were you have to go,
but I still like the third pedal and wagel stick for hill controll ( descent ) :y
-
the reason i was told for auto or semiautos gettin popular was, and i quote ' if you take the clutch pedal away from the driver you take away a lot of problems'. what he meant was no ridding the clutch, no over-reving to get the best fuel ecomony etc. also meant if the lorry was hard on fuel it wasnt the drivers fault as the gearbox decided what to do. it happened here wuth a big customer of vovlvos who had fm12s v2 with i shift, they were hard on fuel and the drivers couldent be blamed, still not sorted i think!

Ive always had a good mpg with the trucks that I drove, I belive it is on the driver and how he drives on what mpg he would or should get.
But I see the point your making :y
-
ive seen brand new clutchs on new trucks being burnt out cause the driver would always take off in third weather it was loaded or not cause that is what he always did or not knowing there was a half gear. brakes only lasting 25000km and scrapping discs and drums in the same time.

I can belive it. there is a lot of idiots on the road and they give us a bad name. ( us = truck drivers )
Its normaly commen sence that if your loaded ie 44t or less that you take a low gear. and when empty a bit higher ie third.
like I said it is the driver that controlls the mpg and wear and tear on the truck.
-
i know brivers who get 200000km out of brake linings on discs, there trucks have had no expense on them in 3 yrs, only servicing costs and windscreens and mirror backs! it only takes one to have everybody tarnished with the same brush [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif].
its hard trying to tell a driver that he has to move with the times and change his driving style, new engines dont need to be reved as hard and the limiter is there for a reason!
-
like the saying goes " you cant teach an old dog new tricks"
But some younger drivers are the same.
-
its the youger drivers are the problem. all the old hands had some basic knowledge of there trucks, they could try to get it home or now where an air leak is and what it comes from. now they dont even check oil or anything. many a time ive went to a breakdown to replace a fuse, didnt know what to check.
-
As some of you will know the earlier Volvos require you to set off in a low gear loaded or not. When i'm loaded i set off in 2nd low split, a driver should be able to feel whether a wagon's happy or bogging down.
Regarding the 2 530XFs in question the gaffer told me today he's not buying them. :( & no more Volvos so my next truck will be another Scania >:( which he loves. I said i won't drive another 4 series & will only drive an R series which at least have a better cab layout.
Was told i'd better nurse my Volly on for a bit longer then!!!! ::)

Sounds like he has a clear plan, the rest is up to you.... ::) ::) ::)

dafs give bother with heads leaking. the r series has a better cab, scania had to do something about it. theres nothing like a mighty swede, they love them over here
-
You're right mate & i love my globy it's a cracking truck, i can stand up & walk about in there & i'm not a little bloke!!! Trouble is he loves Scanny's & i don't. The R series are better but the others are a ridiculous layout, no storage & you CANNOT hurry the box between high & low range without hitting a neutral when you most need it.
I HATE SCANIAS!!!!!!! >:(
-
thats slander over here! the volvo has a nice layout but the scania is still bad although they have lost the ladder now. had one in bits about 6 mths ago putting lights on the roof, a classic with all the toys. who ever uses the coffee machine?
-
Sorry mate i just think they're tinny rattly old trucks & don't see the appeal.
Never driven an R series ...yet, i know i will. Do they have the same slow gearbox issues as the earlier ones or have Scania finally caught up with everyone else? ::)
-
dont worry mate i dont like them either, they are a c**t to work on i think. its the same box i think cause the one i was in was an auto thing. the reason they like them over here is the v8 and the horse power, theres nothing pulls like them and they love there sidepipes.
