The Times revealed yesterday that a factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, which is Britain’s only significant manufacturer of wind turbines, will produce its last batch of seven-tonne blades this week. More than 600 people employed at the plant and a related facility in Southampton, will be made redundant at the end of the month. All 7,000 turbines that the Government committed itself yesterday to installing over the next decade will be manufactured overseas.

What the bloody hell is the country coming to  >:( >:(

Living in the East Midlands, like I do, the pillocks at the BBC provide us with Southampton local news (and they are unaware that anything exists beyond Winchester), so we've had this story non rather stop for over a week, and I'm tired of it.

The company (a Danish firm) has made a commercial decision that as their biggest market is in the far east, its better to relocate the factories there. Thats life.

Although born in Southampton, I now exist north of Winchester! :-?

It always seemed an odd place to make stuff as unwieldy as wind turbines. Used to see the blades being manhandled up the M3. Gawd knows how they got them on the IOW ferry - or is that the bit they did in Southampton?  :-/

So, our government will be "spending its' way out of recession" not only buying wind turbines that won't work and will spoil the countryside, but foreign wind turbines that won't work and.....  >:(

South of Winchester? Here be dragons. :o

A few years ago when I was an apprentice.  i had a chance to go look round Davy lowey Engineering in Darnall, Sheffield.

Was a hude and amazzing place.  At the time they were building the Russion's some Ingot maniipulators, for rollong 6 ton steel ingots that had just been heated in a furnace.

they were also making machines that rolled out the tin foil to x/ microns thick,  they had loads of rooms making gear wheels 10', 15', and even bigger.

They were also the company behind the Thames barrier. and even an hydralic press that stood as high as a block of flats, thats when rested dimmed all the lights in that sub station area.

We reckon at the time it was one of the top 5 engineering in the UK at the time.

Where are they now?  They dont exist anymore because more and more work was brought in from abroad.

So like the wind farm makers then nothing surprisses me with the country.
