Just been checking through my bank statements online and found out I've been stung by fraudsters!! >:( Over £500 worth of fraudulent transactions over the last few months. Had to phone my bank to get card cancelled and thank God my account will be credited with every fraudulent transaction - phew!
It appears my debit card has been cloned and although all the transactions were in US Dollars, the sites taking money were all over the place but the majority were in Cyprus.
Problem is I didn't notice it initially as each transaction was relatively small - between £25 and £50, but there were around 17 transactions in total. :o
Lesson to be learned..........must check my account thoroughly on a regular basis! :-[

Its easier not to have any money in your account :D

Sorry to hear that Bob - could have been worse all the same - at least you caught it early enough.
It leaves a bad taste in the mouth all the same.
Sage advice about regularly checking statements :y

So will you be reconciling your bank account weekly from now on then? :D
Millions don't. That's why it's so easy to steal.

Not far off the truth EP :y

One of my banks informed me they have set my account not to authorise any transactions outside the UK. When I enquiered why it was explained that the only reason I would ever need to use the card abbroad was if i was there using it. So the account now bars all access outside the UK and I just need to tell them if I want to go abbroad and use the card.
Must admit after thinking about it that it sounded a good idea to stop unlawfull use.

Trouble is, I only used to look at mini statements most of the time and I didnt see the fraudulent transactions as they were out of the date range of the mini statement. So yes, weekly reconcilliations from now on. ::)

I cant understand why you're not more careful Bob. I checked my bank account and credit card accounts at least three times a week. Takes no more than five minutes.
-
My bank called me about an year back to verify if a few of my transactions were valid - as there were cash withdrawls in the UK but the account was also debited a few minutes back from the US and Spain.
Good spot on their part and I have never considered changing bank since.. Good service is always remembered. :y

Not if you travel alot, have you tried calling the bank everytime you go abroad or even worse calling them once you are there?
I go abroad about 5-6 times a year and always have problems >:(

The fraud system we use is fairly intelligent if it sees you travel a fair amount to the same countries then it will normally let them through only if it is an unusual country will it question things. :y

Stable door......horse bolted......
Yeh I know Steve, I should know better especially as my job is Accounts Manager!! :-[ :-[ :-[
Certainly will from now on!

they are clever enough to do a few quid at a time, rather than 1 big one. Except when my colleagues Amex got done, booked around 30 flights all at the same time from different locations/destinations. Surely some alarm bells must have gone off

My son had this too mate, but only £30.99 but thats not the point, Barclays couldn't have been more helpful and they gave the money back 2 days after the forms were sent in. Which is suprising as many people say they had problems with them and getting there money back to them.

I'm still waiting for £430 from Barclaycard from around 5 or 6 years ago. Useless retards, ended up costing them an awful lot more than what they owed me.

I got a phone call from an adviser from my bank trying to be helpful the other day. He remarked that I didn't have a savings account (not one of theirs, at any rate) and that I really should move any spare money out of my current account where it would be "safe from fraud".
I replied that, if their current accounts are so risky, why have they just activated a £2,500 overdraft facility out of the blue that I neither wanted nor asked for. >:(

My wife's bank spotted a £1 bet on an online gambling site, and immediately suspended the card.

...and we both check our accounts on a daily basis....

ouch, least you spotted it quickly and its being resolved :y

Problem is, my bank have recently issued me with one of those farcical PIN machines for logging in to online banking. Normally I haven't got it with me when I think about checking my account so I'm ashamed to say it doesn't get checked as often as it should any more.
I can understand needing it before transfferring money, but I need the damned thing to log in and again when I try to make a transfer. ::)

No, they said that they flag up anything outside of the pattern the card is normally used for.

It always makes me laugh when I speak to customers who say our fraud detection system is too sensitive :o :o :o
I just ask them would they prefer the fraud to happen instead ;D

I must confess I have complained about this to Barclays!
I didn't use my Debit card at all at the time apart from 1 payment every month to the local council, same day, same amount. Every month I had to call up because it was flagged as fraudulent use :o :o got a little frustrating in the end! >:( >:(
