I have a wireless router with a small network of 3 x PCs in my home.
I pay Virgin £18 a month for the service.
How do i find out if anyone nearby are connecting to the net free of charge via my wireless connection.
Only reason i ask is that on doing a search for connections i could use to connect to the net it just came up with mine (belkin)
-
Just set a password on your router to stop other people using it.
Look in the manual for WEP or WPA. :y

I can generally see other networks (various neighbours) from my PC but it does ask for passwords if I attempt to connect to them. ::)

It would be a waste of time me trying to tell you mate, I had broadband but was not connected to mine.... so God knows how long I was connected to nextdoor ;D if I had known I would have cancelled mine ;D

Go for WPA - I can crack WEP passwords in a few minutes!!
-
1 way you can tel if some one is using your wireless connection is to have a look out the window for a parked car with someone sitting with a laptop on there laps :y
-
login into the router and change/add a password either on wpa or wpa2
select your router here and follow the instructions on how to set it up http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=204037 :y
-
Ah cheers plomien will try that

That won't work in a block of flats, where people around you can use your internet.
Thats generally where most people pinch internet, our router does not really have the power to stretch the 50/60 feet to the road from my house.

Why not just stick with wired systems - inviting even more RF inside the home, especially when it's in such close proximity, can't be a good thing, can it? :-/ :-/ :-/

Ahhh. A man after my own heart! Wifi at home is largely a marketing thing to sell kit. You will always get faster, more reliable, more secure networking over cable.
Sales of nice long masonry drills would have to soar though. I've now got a 500mmx12mm for going through walls.

I can currently see 14 Wireless Access points, 2 of which apparently unsecured....

Your router logs will tell you who has been doing what, and when they were doing it.
As far as security goes, go for the best encryption that both the router & your clients can handle (WPA2-PSK is the one you want).
Don't bother with WEP encryption, I (and plenty of others) can break that in under a minute every time...and WPA isn't much better.

Most small dsl routers out there don't do any logging, and most that can rely on a seperate syslog to log to.
WEP is pointless (but better than nought as it still requires effort on part of person trying to use it)
WPA is 'adequate'
WPA2 is the current top kiddie, though many drivers still do not support it.
PSK is always the weak point, as people pick dictionary words normally. If you have the facilities, Infrastructure/Radius is a better option.

Every chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
WPA2-PSK is without doubt the best for the "home" user, but if they are going to make it easy by using dictionary words then the system used can hardly be blamed for being "weak"

I'd argue, unless they have fairly new stuff, WPA is best due to lack of WPA2 support on may wifi devices (particularly non-pc wifi devices).
Obviously, WPA2 if you can
-
I love it when you two talk dirty.

To be honest, the only devices I've found so far that can't support WPA2 (and above) are the kids DS's.

i took a wpc from behind years ago. does that count for anything?????

The old bag's DS I think can only do WEP :o. Needless to say that ain't allowed on my network ;D
My old phone can defo only do WPA, not WPA2. 2 of my older laptops can also only do WPA.

Nope, even though its just up the road from here. Shoulder injury playing up, can't ride at the moment :'(

Due to some consoles we are stuck with WEP as well - but I have changed the supervisor password for the router
