Title: 3 hours to crack a MS Word 2007 password
Post by: Omegadoha, Desert Member on 16 August 2009, 18:45:01
I'm currently covering for a colleague who is on vacation at the moment. I'm supposed to be pushing his report out which is top urgent, however, he had placed a password on the word file and not told me! It's supposed to be confidential.

So I've just sat here for the last 3 hours and had to crack the password on the file so that the report can be issued tomorrow. Couldn't even get hold of him, he's in Sri Lanka.

I don't know why we bother with all this security and confirdential processes. SOmetimes they just create grief. With regards to confidentialy, everyone knows the contents anyway.

If he's password protected it and you crack it, he should be sacked.

3 hours to crack an MS password (which was probably dictionary based)......you need to get a PC thats up to date in the speed stakes  ;D ;D

Older office files were easy, but later ones appear to be more secure, so I agree, likely to be a dictionary word

Yeah it was dictionary based OK. Just took the computer ages which I've had for six months.
