Title: More computer help please.
Post by: Vamps on 17 August 2009, 21:36:06
On a notebook computer, is it possible to switch the battery off so that it will work only on mains.?  On Miss Vamps it has suddenly stopped working on it's battery, battery fine, but also the battery charge level symbol has gone, just says ac power.

Have you tried a reboot Mike?
Battery monitor on mine decided to disable itself yesterday but a reboot soon cured it.

It's not possible to switch the battery "off", although it's quite possible that Windows own integral power monitoring is corrupt (if that's what you are using).

The system BIOS should report the true state of the battery.

Sorry KW but no idea what any of that means. It was working on batter fine then suddenly will not even switch on on battery and no battery indicator, as if battery does not exist anymore. :o :o

If it won't even power up from the battery, then either the battery or the associated cicuitry inside the laptop are fubared.

My first test (after seeing what the BIOS says about the battery) would be to get a multimeter on the battery and see what voltage is being reported.
No voltage back says battery is open circuit, which would quite easily cause the problem you see now.

It should work on AC with the battery taken out - this site says it's something you should do occasionally anyway to extend battery life http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2324229,00.asp

It will work on mains, won't work on battery and this battey has been used correctly unlike the one in my laptop that has been on constant charge for 2 years and his hence shot. ::)
