I`ve gone and sold my tv to the supervisor at work as he wanted a large screen plasma tv....So i rang the tv licence people up on friday and told em i no longer want a tv licence as i no longer have a tv....They did`nt half give me a grilling over it Why had i sold my telly? cant afford the licence fee and i dont want to get fined so i sold it i told em....Ok mr.lovatt but you do realise its an offnece not to have a licence? i dont have a tv now so why would i need a licence? you might buy a new one mr.lovatt...Erm no i said i just told you i cant afford the licence fee at the moment so i sold my tv to avoid watching tv illegally and getting a massive fine and anyways i work nights and i sleep during the day and i cant stand jeremy kyle!!! so i sold it...Ok mr.lovatt i dont believe you so i`m going to arrange a visit to check up on you...why???? i said...Its my belief you are lying mr.lovatt and i must caution you that this call is being recorded and will be used in evidence in your prosecution as to trying to avoid buying a tv licence....Ok mate if this call is being recorded give me your name as when this visit occurs and they see i `ve sold my tv and ps2 and home cinema system and their is no tv in the house i`m gonna make sure you are disciplined and even possibly fired from your job for threating behaviour and slander....funny enuff the line went dead and i was cut off....I wonder when this visit will be???? ::) ::)

I worked with a bloke who'd had no end of trouble with TV licencing knocking on his door cos he had no telly and hence no TV licence. I don't think it helped his cause when he wouldn't let them in to show them he didn't have one. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Jobsworth that can't see a life without TV. He may have people try it on I guess, sounds like you handled it well :y Let us know ifyou get a visit ::) ::), and what you say to the person that visits.... :D :D
-
Oh i`ll let em in cause they`ll have the name of the person who instigated the investigation and i`ll be able to raise a formal complaint then against him.....Jumped up little civil service git.... >:( >:( And i will buy a new tv just not yet as i want to try be as light as possible in the amount of stuff i have to shift out of the house when i downsize.....
-
Jumped up little....
If those were the words he used in the conversation - then agreed - there are ways of saying things.... :-/

Good old TV Licensing, their ineptitude truly knows no bounds.
My partner was warned (for the 4th time) 2 weeks ago that she is going to be taken to court for having no TV license.
Silly ba$tards haven't bothered to do a check to see if the address actually has a license in force, because if they had then they'd already know the license is in my name.
Much as I'd love a day in court to humiliate them, it would present a conflict of interest for me because I also detest the taxpayers money being wasted on frivolous crap that can be easily checked before any money is spent.

I was reading about somone famous the other day(will try and find out who)who told the licensing people that he didnt have a TV,so no licence. They sent him a letter thanking him for informing them and assured him that he would have no further trouble from them. ::)
-

He'd have had a longer wait that that if he'd been waiting for me to find it. >:( >:( >:(

i was in two minds to drop the tele :)
-
As I moved I phoned up and changed my adress, they told me to carry on with the old licence at my new address, surely that means the records are inaccurate.
Also as I still have my ither house the monthly reminders are coming though for licence reminders, cant be bovvertrd to inform them,
-
Been there, got the snotty letters, compained about their tone, got apology. Just ignore them, mate. As said, just sad jobsworths with a tiny, tiny little empire to defend. ;D

Did you know that even if you do not have a tv in your property, but have a vcr, you are still required to have a tv licence?
Strange but true.
:-?

You have a computer Bertie. You are capable of watching BBC iplayer.

You need a TV license if you own any equipment that is capable of receiving a television signal.

Spot on!

Wrong. No you don't ;)
I recently gave my TV to my mam, so i informed the licence people that i'd bought a monitor to play my xbox & to watch DVD's. They said as long as i don't have the aerial plugged in & the TV or what ever equipment is not set to receive TV signals then all's ok, so i spent £300.00 on a 28" monitor for nowt. If you care not to believe me, go on to the BBC licence site & all will be revealed :y

correct, you can have as many tv capable devices as you like, as they have other uses.
the restriction is they must not be connected to an aerial, or tuned in.

I'd like to see them prove the TV card in one of my Linux boxes is tuned in. Took me long enough to figure it out! ;D

I had exactly the same situation. Licence in my name, kept getting threatening letters in partners name.
I ignored the letters because if they can't be bothered to do a quick check on the address then I am not going to make costly phone calls to them to set them straight. Not my job I'm afraid! >:( >:(

Threatening seems to be their main policy at present. Aren't they the ones who say " We've got a database and you can't hide from us."?
I've seen a few databases in my time and many of them are designed to be very rickety.
It used to be that case that a receiver had to be disabled in some way to overcome the need for a licence but I've heard a few people now who have been told that they only need to disconnect the aerial and that's it. Surprises me as that sounds trusting.
-
What annoys me more than anything is that we have sky so don't use the aerial at all. It is not even plugged in to the tv or sky box. So why should I pay tv licence?

Because you receive tv? It's nothing to do with aerials although a satellite dish is an aerial, just not a yagi.
-
Understand that Chris but I am paying twice!

Understand that Chris but I am paying twice!
But it is your choice to pay for Sky who give you additional TV channels, and the TV Licence is for use of the airways in Britain, rather like paying your road tax, but paying also for buying your vehicle and filling it with petrol! :D :D ;) ;)
-
Understand that Chris but I am paying twice!
I'm with you on that. Consequently I don't pay for the extra channels on principle(ish).
Presumably you have free access to the BBC on Sky which is where most of the license revenue goes?
-
Thats my point Chris. I have access to BBC on Sky and don't use terrestrial in any way. I only have the basic package with Sky.
I understand its my choice Lizzie but still find it unfair!
-
Crikey i`ve stirred a hornets nest here aye i? Mind ya i got in from work this morning and 1st thing i said to myself was put the tele on....doh!!! ::)....I dont miss it honest :P ::) ::)

You can have as many tv's as you like with no licence as long as you do not use them. TV licence reps can come down as often as they want but as long as they cannot catch you watching tv or get a signal there is nothing they can do about it.
Even if they have on record the property is empty, they will still still continue to send reminders threats and inspectors. But there is nothing they can do.
