Title: Pasties
Post by: omegod on 21 August 2009, 15:47:23
Just pondering whilst eating a chicken tikka pastie, should there be a line drawn as to what is acceptable to put in one?

I personally think corned beef hash, which is available locally is a step too far!

Corned beef pasties are great! Chicken Tikka, yuk.
It's all a matter of taste you know ::)

I used to love sayers cornish pasties (which, of course, weren't cornish pasties). I reckon if you get fed things when you are young, ie, your mums gravy, pastry etc., then you remember them as being 'proper' when you grow up.

Corned beef hash - yum!
I also like sausage and bean pasties and salmon pasties!

Can't think of anything that shouldn't be in a pasty to be honest!

It's exceptable to put just about anything in them, connective tissue, bits of bone, a whole manner of things. They slice it up so fine you just don't know.

Some years back my mate was tucking into some Aldi Irish Stew & came across a cow's eye lid, complete with lashes :P :P :P :P NICE ;D

Don't mind what goes in them, but they should ban that horrible Ginsters pastry that crumbles all over the place and tastes like cardboard.

Fine to have flaky pastry if it's eaten hot and fresh. Shortcrust if it's going to be out of a packet IMHO.

As Lizzie said there is no substitute for a real homemade cornish bought from a small shop & NOT in a wrapper. Some factory efforts have carrot ....should be swede & i beliave pasties have thier origin as a miners meal with savoury one end & sweet at the other, jam etc.
Anything you enjoy though can go in a little de frosted pastry (messy job making it yourself) Left over spagbol, chillie, chicken & veggies, egwash & in the oven, sorted! :y

Just necked a Ginsters not 15m ago.

I reckon Ginsters are the best of the branded, packaged ones.  Obviously, you can't beat the real thing.  My favourite is Philps in Hayle.  Ann's pasty shop at The Lizard is too variable - sometimes lovely, sometimes poor.

Stardate 1978 Barnstaple North Devon. Pop to local little old lady Pasty Shop for usual fantastic lunchtime traditional pasty, family shop renowned in the town for 100 years.

Find a small crowd, the door of the shop is sealed with tape, a notice from Council says closed by order of Health Inspector.

Read in a paper next day that the kitchen was inspected for first time ever and premises were immediately closed. Ill spare you the gory details but suffice to say there were many very green faces in town, mine included.   [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif]

I'm too fat to eat pasties. :'( :'( :'(

I weaken about twice a year.  Time before last, I was delayed in Ipswich, missed my lunch and tried a standard pasty from "West Cornwall Pasty Co".  Nothing to write home about for £2.

Last time, I got a 50p pasty from Aldi.  Smashing!

Haven't been to Cornwall since 1954, and my mum would never have let us eat a pasty - "You never know what sort of rubbish they put in them".  A few years later, mum and dad went into the pub business.  Mum was a brilliant cook, and people came from miles around for her pasties.

I know exactly what she put in them... :) :) :)

And if any of you are in cornwall they have ther e own shop on site  and you can buy a box of them  for about £10- , Last time o was down there i bought 12 boxs of varies lines for £26 ( Guess who works for the company)

Coming from and living in Cornwall I agree about Philps in Hayle being one of the best.
My personal favourite is Choaks in Falmouth.
Warrens (found throughout Cornwall/Devon) used to be good until they became too big. Now they are massed produced.
That's the same as Ginsters. They always used to be handmade but they are mainly made by machine now.

They are not hard to make yourself though. You can even buy the pastry frozen if that's what put you off. Once rolled fairly thin, cut it around a dinner plate and fill with layers of potato, swede, onion and the meat (skirting or chuck) Salt and pepper to taste

Simples

In my younger days I did used to make my own pasties, even down to making the puff pastry myself.  I always liked to put something in them that had a certain 'tang', but often went a bit overboard using tons of black pepper, or crushed chillies ::)
