"ENVIRONMENTAL activists are planning a "mass invasion" of a power station following a vote by thousands of people attending the climate camp, it was announced today.
The decision to name E.ON's Ratcliffe-on-Soar plant in Nottinghamshire for the protest in October follows a debate at the camp to determine which site should be targeted next for direct action.
Groups are now planning to descend on the power station on 17 and 18 October by land, water and air, and say they will shut it down
This week's climate camp has seen hundreds of people who've never taken direct action undergoing training and committing to the October invasion."

I find myself in agreement with "Mad Jock"'s comment on the article. Surely this is conspiracy? Were they to succeed in their mad plans, who many lives would be put in danger by the associated power cuts?

This is quite rightly called terrorism and I hope the military are called in to deal with them >:(

...to what end I wonder and have they offered a viable alternative?
I think these individuals are blissfully unaware that they're being manipulated to raise awareness in a debate many of them don't fully understand or don't wish to.
I have no doubt that sinister elements are shaping events here and in that, lies conspiracy.

I would agree Zulu, they should have the facts about babies in incubators etc explained to them, and then see if they still want to shut it down.I can remember this happening at Ballylumford Power station in the early 70,s.The grand old Duke of Ballymena marched his men to the top of that proverbial hill, but when he was told about the reality of what would happen,he marched them back down again. ::)

Gas them. Such a splendid irony :y

Have I missed something here? Surely even a NHS hospital has diesel generators on hot standby for power cuts?
Or is there more to this?
But I do do tend to agree that any minuscule minority group of activists who take it into their heads to invade a power station are perpetrating some form of civil disorder and should be severely dealt with. 8-)

They are entitled to protest all they want, it is (after all) supposed to be a free country.
However, the minute they trespass (and/or endanger others), then forget all the PC 'dangle berries'.....just kick the f**king s**t out of them and send them back home to mummy!

We had the same problem down here not so long ago down Kent with the "swampys" tried to invade Kingsnorth Power Stn ,It cost over 1 mil to police it and when the police got heavy handed the swampys started bleating about thier "Umen Rights" Personally i'd through the book at them if they try to get over or into the complex, about 20 years hard labour would be about right for the low lifes

Er no. They have sump heaters to keep the oil warm but they don't always start first time. The expectation is that power will be available for essential purposes within 40 seconds.
Critical care, operating theatres & special care baby units should have UPS (battery) supplies to keep things running for 20 minutes or until the generators kick in.
Standing orders should be that no operations are started while relying on the generators because there is then no safety back up.

rather idiots. should all be drowned in a vat of rats pi55

global warming is a natural phenomenom. it will happen with or without human intervention. as soon as these fukwits understand this the better

Big deal, they will just take it off load again for a week as we actualy have surplus generating capacity in the uk at the moment with industry running short time.

Shouldn't have to take it off load just to accomodate that lot.
It would be an ideal time to test out the terrorist defence strategy using these idiots as guinea pigs.

To be honest, its not bene on load much recently anyway

these eco-warrior muppets are ridiculous, endangering themselves and others, not to mention diverting emergency services - even if it's a bluff, it has to be assumed it's real and plans put in place >:(
tell you what - if any of them need an ambulance, send them a horse and cart as presumably they find the internal combustion engine to be morally wrong? ;D ;D

Take them to a mud hut in the sticks and treat them with leeches and green tea.

Interesting that even the government now admits that we face power shortages in the future:

Should they succeed in their plans to scupper plans for all new power stations, the Greenies will only the scenario worse. Pillocks. >:(

A few observations I feel would be in order.
1. Funny how the hang em high, drown em in rats p1ss ( I liked that one) etc brigade come out on such an issue as trespass. I don't hear the same people when the gits that broke into my brothers house get let off with a "warning" (whatever that is). Wasn't that trespass and the stolen goods never turned up and the insurance company has made them jump through hoops. They were only drug addicts not long haired swampies, I suppose that is the difference.
2. Even if they managed to breach security they could never turn the power station off (unless they managed to significantly raise the temp of the river upstream somehow). Even if they did the security of the national grid and power supplies is assured. It is just conceivable that the National Grid company has actual plans for such a contingency.
3. We live in a democracry (thank goodness) and peaceful but massed protest has actually achieved a lot of good in the past. Two examples are Greenham common/nukes and the poll tax.
4. Perhaps there won't actually be an "invasion" but at least the organisers will have raised the subject in the consciousness of a lot more people than say a scientist would publishing a paper in some obscure magazine.
5. Thanks again Nickbat for bringing a contentious issue to a wider audience for their delectation.

more excellent observations Varche - totally agree with peaceful protest, when it turns toward violence is when I can't support it (you don't walk into a power station peacefully if you're not meant to be there)
i'm sure the authorities will be more than adequately prepared at all power stations across the UK, needlessly diverting resources
anyone is free to believe whatever they like and demonstrate their feelings - just don't let it unfairly disrupt others - unless the cause itself is freedom from oppression or tyranny, this tho is perpetrated by a largely middle-class bunch of halfwit graduates and is not worthy of any support. i'm sure if Daddy's money was cutoff and they had to get a job this wouldn't seem such a priority for them :y
-
I know where they keep the coal for this power station, but i'm not telling :P :P :P :P :P There's hundreds of thousands of tonnes of the stuff all piled up & waiting for movement.
If they wanted to scupper the power station, then the best approach is to cut the supply ;)

we have 3 big diesel engine gen sets at our site where i work (large water treatment plant) they have been tested and maintained etc, but never actually used in a power failure. So one day last year, management decided to cut the power to the site, to test the gennys.....none of them started. BIG opps up lol
