Title: Power Cut Info
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 03 September 2009, 14:55:51
Have had 4 power cut since I move in June, 2 of which were last night.

Does anyone know of any sites where I can gain info on these cuts.

I am I South Yorkhire,  Should be with Npower but sadly have E-On at the moment (Long Story)

I did get some info on the phone and told it was a WAN problem, so assuming that means a Wide Area Network problem there must be internet info available.

TIA.   :y

Also after info regards sub stations and Power stations that actually supplymy power.

It`s a regular thing here in the hilly-bits of Wales; `power`s 'on and off like a Jewish wedding!' ;D

I bought a UPS (though `not a very good one) to try and alleviate the inconvenience of lost data and damaged computers. ::)

I did complain to my R.E.C (Scottish Power) but they cited T & C`s not promising absolute continuity of supply, only to supply power within 'standards' when there! :-?

Not aware of any, they do achieve a 6 9's availability of supply though!

There will be a number of sub stations involved, reducing from the 400KV super grid down to 415V three phase within your street.  Your house will be fed from one of the three phases (240V between phase and neutral).  Your power cuts will be as a result of a fault developing within one of these sub stations, probably the smaller local one in your area.

As for which power station your electricity comes from, really its impossible to say.  The national grid transmission system covers the UK with all generators connected to the grid.  Electricity is generated on-demand so say you switch your kettle on, the total demand goes up by 1 'kettles worth', all the generating Units selected to frequency response (mainly coal fired units as nuclear and gas turbine plant is very inflexible) see a slight increase in demand and generate a little bit more electricity to keep the system frequency at or around 50Hz.  So your kettles worth of electricity might come from Longannet in Scotland (coal), Dinorwig in Wales (Hydro), Drax, Ferrybridge or Eggborough in Yorkshire (Coal), Ratcliffe where they are going to invade in October (coal), Tilbury near London (Coal) etc etc

Fair enough,  like most subjects it can get as involved as you want it to.

Any more info required and I'll do my best :)

Nobody could accuse me of that, I am a bit of a lurker!

Still, miss it.  Jeep is, well, Ok.  I do find myself looking though.  Am seriously looking to replace our second car with an Omega next April (bonus time)
