Title: Why read newspapers?
Post by: Nickbat on 13 September 2009, 22:02:43
This is all about two German ships navigating the Arctic NE passage.

This is front page news people! Wow, we're all doomed..

But wait a minute, it's all cr*p.

The ships weren't going to Rotterdam after all, they were going  to Siberia! And they were escorted by two nuclear powered Russian ice breakers which can plough through 2-metre thick ice. Plus, the journey's be done before - regularly!!.

Two excellent pieces here. The first debunks the story in the Indy (and the BBC) and the second really hammers  The Mail (which will make Bannjaax's day!  ;))

Incidentally, the story's been debunked widely; I only chose these two articles because they are so thorough in their debunking.. (Plus the fact that I love the headline on the second "The turd eaters".)  ;D ;D ;D

It's the usual con, rather akin to the peacock displaying its plummage, looks good, gets attention and affords some form of benifet to the displayer. ;D

Anything to lift the circulation - what?.

The Mail can be excused - well ::) ::) ::) - because it can :y ( for bj's benifet) ;D

Yes, Zulu, but we're talking about a front page splash. It can't be dismissed merely as a con. It is an out-and-out misrepresentation, designed to instill fear amongst the readers. Who benefits from that? Not the readership, and certainly not the Press.

We are entering a period in which truth is an inconvenience, to be avoided at all costs. That both worries me and angers me. The Press have a moral journalistic duty to report the truth and if they get it wrong, they should print the correct version and/or issue a retraction.

Bet neither the Indy, nor the Mail do so.  >:( >:( >:(

I read last week that the editor of the Mail just splashed out £3.5M on a 15,000 estate in Scotland. He must be doing something right.

Perhaps newspapers should cary a Gov Information Warning, " the news contained in this paper may or may not be true, and indeed may be total fiction".

Papers allways report the truth.  The daily Sport reported a WW2 bomber had crashedon the moon, isnt that the real reason that brnson is starting a sight seeing shuttle service.   ::)

He usually introduces this song  with ..."I,d like to dedicate this song to Mr Rupert Murdoch". ;)

I have no idea what you are on about Tunnie.

I assume a Z list celeb

But then I do a TV survey (for payment) and for Saturday I could only put one programme down.

Early afternoon BBC 1

Only celeb news I want to know - is Lewis still with the PCD?

hi nickbat, just read the story - isn't the news the fact that for the first time in 125000 years this route can be navigated without icebreakers (the reason it was prohibitively expensive and the russians were reluctant to use it) it's been navigated, but not easily and cheaply before now  :y

you're right tho - the Indy did lapse into "the sky's falling in mode" don't know if it deserved a front page screaming headline either (slow news day?)

That's why I never read the paper or watch the news, It's hard enough dealing with the crap you know exists for sure without worrying about some other f**ker who you've never met (and are never likely to).
