Title: Why you can faff about all morning.....
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 28 February 2007, 23:18:46
First off changed the brake light bulb in my meega...coz it told me i had a brake light out  :y

Next veccyC.......its got warning light on for bulb out....but doesnt tell me which one  :(

So......lights on and i discover headlight bulb gone.....so change that (after losing a tad of skin  >:( )and still complaining of bulb out  :(

So double check and fog light rear nearside isnt working either...so change that....and its still complaining!!  >:( and the bulb still doesnt light!....so im thinking ive got the wrong bulb and pull the offside cluster out to check.....notice on the offside theres 3 bulbs on....nearside only one?  :-/

Discover theres 2 bulbs for the tailights each side.....change the other and alls happy on the display...no warning coming up anymore...

But 2 questions.....foglight rear nearside still doesnt work....altho a new bulb fitted....and warning light happy....2nd ques....how come the tailights are 21W bulbs??? yes thats correct the taillights are 21W bulbs .....that would be ultra bright for taillights?.....are they only getting 6v ....or summat???

Is it aupposed to have fog lights on both sides? Some times there's a lens and reflector so they can use the same part ofr LHD but only the offside is used in the UK.

21w tail lights can't be right. Sounds like someone has fitted the wrong bulbs. I doubt they'd do anything as elaborate as dim 21w bulbs. Are they less bright than the brake lights with 21's in?

Not sure....but there was a bulb in the holder for the rear fog on nearside (21w) :-/

And yes the 21w for the taillights are noticeabley dimmer than fog for example.

I'll have to get my meter on them to find out whats going on.....

I suspect its something like Ford used (still?) to do with their front headlights......turn the sidelights on....they didnt have sidelight bulbs...just used to put 6v through the main headlight bulbs instead.

well combined stop/tail lights are 21/5W so a tail light only should be 5W. 21W would be for stop or fog light ... don't forget to check the (front) sidelights too?

Had another play today.....

Reason for the 21w bulbs for the tail lights.....theres only 2.5v across them.....so i guess its vx trying to prolong the life of the bulbs  :-/

After asking another veccyC driver to turn his rear fogs on, only his offside worked as well.
I did think for a min vx were being clever and the nearside one comes on if the offside bulb blows.....buts its not the case  :( So that looks like the norm then and Keven was right....its probably only there with a bulb in it for lhd versions.

your car tells you your brake lights dont work???

DAMN I'M STUPID!! I dont listen to my car and had no idea both mine were out! Which light tells you there's a bulb out?

My apologies, I'm not used to these luxuries, I'm from Wigan

I suspect your GLS only has a TID, not a MID, hence no check control....

Does your display say 'check brakelight' when you turn ignition on?

Bet your display is only half height as well. Its a TID, and it does nothing other than tell time, temp and radio info

Having check control is quite handy.....apart from brakelights it checks.....it also checks
front headlights
tail lights
oil level
coolant level
washer bottle level

and probably a few others ive forgotten about  :-/

That would have been "dim dip" which was a legal requirement at some point. It was a fantastic idea -- whenever the ignition is on and sidelights are switched on, it also switched the headlights on through a seperate control system to illuminate them at low power. They were much more visible than candle power sidelights, so you could still see the idiots who refuse to switch on their dipped beam even in the middle of night time.

Quite why they got rid of this system I'll never know, we're back to squinting to pick out the tiny candle light bulbs on cars with only sidelights on in the dark :-/ Legistlators never fail to amaze me.

Dim-Dip came in around 1986 IIRC, and diminished a few years ago.  If people are too stupid to turn on their dipped beam (or turn off their effing foglights), they shouldn't be allowed to drive (or live) imho  >:(

Good point  :y .....tho i suspect a GLS will still have pad sensor and warning light on the dash for it

Manufacturers have already decided people are too stupid to turn their headlights with ever increasing 'auto lights on' function  ;D

Im sure in a while they will soon have a 'fog' sensor too  :D

I had dim dip on the Carlton - great for slightly dodgy conditions were headlamps would annoy

I had it on my 88 Astra and found the same as you Martin.  Interestingly, this is on both my 98 transits, but not the Cavalier or Omega.

It'd help if a lot of the half wits on the road turned any of their lights on! It amazes me the number of drivers who seem to be of the idea that as they can see where they're going they don't need lights on.  >:(
