I hve a Fuji Finepix S5000, good camera, am only a novice and does all I want etc.
Had it a few years now and a while back suffered picture loss from a genuine card whilst it was in the camera. Card was a genuine Fuji XD card and it came up with Card Error on Screen. Managed o retrieve some pics from the card and then binned it.
Well the camera has been sat on the shelf for quite a while and obviously the batteries went flat, put a fresh set in this morning, set the date, time etc. Then got the Card error again. Same make of card as I allways use genuine cards.
So whats the problem. Is it the card slot?
Is it the fact the camera has been unused for agaes.
Flat batteries?????
Once I can cope with, but not twice.
What is the most realiable media storage that camera's use as I am now looking at buying annother camera today.
TIA. :y

personally like compact flash, but think thats seen as a bit old hat now.
as for media makes....I ALWAYS use SANDISK, very reliable media
would also use lexar, but sandisk (extreme 3) is my card of choice.
never had an issue on Compact Flash or SD cards.

as for camera choice....any your looking at?
Been a big fan of Canon's personally
From my DSLR.....to the prosumer G series, to the pocket ixus,
all the ones I use have been very good and reliable :y

Answer from Fuji website
When you recieve a "Card Error" or "Card Not Initialized" message, this indicates that your memory may be temporarily corrupted. This can be due to not formatting your memory card on a consistent basis. Most consumers will use the "delete all" feature and continue to take pictures. By doing this, the file format of the card may become unstable.
We recommend formatting your memory card in your camera after saving the images from your previous shooting session. Once a memory card is formatted, the images will not be recoverable.

Flash media is pretty unreliable, though normally reformatting brings them back (flash seems to randomly bit flip).
I use Verbatim mainly, but do have a few 2G Kingston SD for my camera and 8G Kingston for the iPaq. No idea how I ended up with Kingston, as I don't rate their memory much, but guess it was either cheap or what I could get in a hurry.
Tend to use SANDISK in the phone (microSD)
To be honest, all have lost data if left long term, the 2 Kingston SD seem to corrupt occasionally even short term, but may be as they are used in camera, I'm always pulling them in and out of card readers, and the associated stresses on it physically of being handled.

Yup, its the nature of NAND based flash.
I always do a format (Low level format according to Canon camera) every time I empty the card.

reading the above may be why I never have an issue....
photos always downloaded in a timely manner using a card reader, never the camera itself...
then back in the camera, format, start again :y

Also, I reformat card before I use camera particularly if its been unused for a few weeks

Going to order a cheapie camera on Monday, am after one with a remote control facility on it. (Got some more building work going on next week, hence wanting a working camera.)
Then at a later date will get a nice camera for myself.

Welll well well.
Just gone to format the card in the camera and start over, on both the take picture and view picture settings I cannot get any method upto format the card.
So took the card out andblewthe dust "if any" out of the slot, put card back in and hey presto, all is good.
Also am very lucky, the card had some pictures onfrom builders damageing cars with thier vans and lorries. ::)

Classes 4 & 6 refer to write speed, you want 6.
Scandisk is the best, for camera work i'd make sure you get a high-speed card, i got a fast one for my SLR as you can take 60 photos one after the other, standard cards cannot be written to that fast.

That the one I was looking at, I allready have the mains power adpter.
My S5000 is 6MP and 10X optical zoom, with this it is wide format and 10MP with 15X zoom, plus the remote is someting I havebeen after for a while.
The other camera that took my eyes was the S100 with the tilt view screen, would make life easy for me with the low down shots. but the rest of the specs dont match.
