Title: How much has domestic gas cost you this Summer?
Post by: MarkG on 18 September 2009, 20:38:45
With all this talk about gas prices being kept artificially high, I thought I'd work out what it actually costs me per day just for hot water. We have a conventional gravity fed system with a quite large 20 year old boiler pumping out max 100,000 btu/hour which is 'serviced' each year by British Gas. Couldn't be too much I thought as we only have it on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night for baths and showers and there are only 3 of us living here. Direct Debits make you lazy and so I had a shock.

If you look at your gas bill it's mighty complicated. There's standing charges and then all sorts of conversion factors, correction factors and calorific values to apply to throw you off. But actually, I found it boils down to about £1.12 per unit (3.19p per KWh for me anyway).

Ignoring the standing charge it comes out at an average of £2.25 per day for the last 5 months. That's nearly £70 per month just for hot water! I shudder to think what's going to happen when the heating kicks in all day.

Is this in line with what you lot pay? I'd like to think I need my meter checking! Or else I'm going to get some more wooly jumpers for the family and get them to wrap up.

I moved not long since and had a combi boiler fitted, so at the moment am recording meter readings.  But from what you are paying, sounds like you would benifit from a water boiler at least, then you jus pay for the water as you use it. I just had the temp of mine turned down yesterday as it was too flipping hot.  But am well impressed so far.

My last gas bill for 77days, dont ask me why 77 days....havent a clue....but it was £40.....hot water on in the morning....usually boiler is on for about 1/2hr until the tank temp hits 60C.....use the power shower in the morning and whats left stays hot enough for the rest of day.....still warm for a wash before bed. But then theres only me using it.....Holly dog prefers to stay unwashed  ;D

Mind you, I seem to recall last winter, the main 'winter' bill for gas was nearly £300 for the quarter  :o
