Title: You'd think the UN would know better...
Post by: Nickbat on 26 September 2009, 22:10:17
...or not, that is.

The United Nations Science Compendium 2009 will no doubt be trumpeted as THE authority on global warming and so on, but.....

...they have published a hockey-stick temperature graph that has not only not been peer reviewed nor come from any science publication, but has actually been grabbed from Wikipedia, where it was contributed by an unknown Norwegian called "Hanno"!!

It is simply his/her artwork and interpretation. Until 24 hours ago, no one had had any idea who “Hanno” was, nor apparently did UNEP. Yet UNEP cites the graph as if it was a published and peer reviewed work as “Hanno 2009[ch8243]. UNEP doesn’t even get the year right as the graph was created in 2005.

So, in summary, a UN scientific publication uses Wikipedia, when even school children are advised not to use it as it is unreliable!  :o  :o

Incidentally, this guy Hanno turns out be a very odd activist. He has also written about motoring, which he describes as "a mental disorder which constitutes a special case of autism." He goes on to say [Google translation] that "It is for autister (resp. motorists) easier to develop a relationship to things in general (resp. special cars) than to other people." He finishes with "As with other forms of autism are men more frequently affected by the motoring than women."

He's a nut, all right. But now he's a very famous nut.
 :D :D ;D ;D

Now we know why the UN never seems able to agree on a resolution regarding some critical world situation!

I dare say next week they will be googling Wikipedia looking for info for a resolution on Iran and long range missiles and as yet previously undiscovered weapons facilities etc etc.

You couldn't make it up.

Agreed - it's a talking shop for diplomats unconnected, in any practical sense, to the real world.

You couldn't make it up.

They do, and often :y :y

Sounds a bit like the evidence of 'weapons of mass destruction' dossier saga we had a few years ago.  ;D
