Basically i boot the laptop up, log in to windows, then it loads my desktop background, and a cursor. but nothing else. No Icons, no task bar, no start menu etc. I can CTRL + ALT + DELETE press new task and type explorer.exe which does nothing. Ive booted in safe mode with works ok. I have rolled back using system restore to last sunday when it was fine, but still does the same thing. I think this has happened since windows installed an auto update the other night.

Could be a problem with your user profile or you may have the Vundo virus which can cause similar symptoms. Try downloading and running Vundofix - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/VundoFix.shtml
Or try setting up a new user profile.

From task manager, see if you can start explorer (New > Task > explorer.exe)

OPs tried that and it won't run.

Its sp3 for windows dont down load it, I fix alot of PC's laptops and the common fault is Windows SP3, if it works ok with SP3 then fine but wait till it updates then see things go wrong!!

If SP3 causes the system to crash, then the installation was f**ked beforehand.

I'm with Killerwatt on this one. SP3 is a reliable, tried and tested, and most importantly essential upgrade for the very old XP.
Though I've said it on a number of occasions, and particularly relevant for XP, by the time the SP comes round, Windows is due a rebuild anyway.

I could be that your 'explorer.exe' file may be deleted or corrupted. If so, Copy the 'explorer.exe' file from 'C:/WINDOWS' folder from any working/healthy(eg., your friend's)computer and paste it in your 'C:/WINDOWS' directory and Restart your system.
at least that way you can save any data before a full reinstall :y
-
agree with KW & TB I've installed SP3 on dozens of PCs and never had a problem related to it, including all subsequent updates.
-
Installed SP3 on lots of PC's and not one has died!!!
only non WGA ones die!!
more than likely either HDD corruption or a virus! back ll your stuff up and do a master restore if its a branded pc!
also on the point of computer problems could a faulty SATA Blueray drive cause system lockups? been having alot of lockups with my PC lately and in the Vista Event viewer theyre is quite a few ATAPI Device errors

Sp3 is crap I had 15 laptop and even more pc's come in with in the first week of it being download'd, windows 7 is the best upgrade for a pc or laptop no fault with it and it is faster on net. I run vista and have never had any problems with it like so called ppl saying they are slow they are not if you know how to use them, get a reg checker and really find out what is wrong with your computer there are some free downloads for them and see how many reg entries are wrong. ive been fixing computers for over 15years.

Just seen you repair computers. Do you repair laptops with intermitant screens. Laptop is a mint Tishiba SP2100. Screen only lights up 1 in 15/20 boot ups, but does not out put to an external screen either.
PM your location details etc would at least be interested in having a quick chat about it. :y ( rustym95 )

Your above statement is utter crap!!

When it does finally bring the LCD up, enter the BIOS and make sure that the option for VGA/LCD (ie, both on at once) is enabled.
If the problem still persists after that, you have an iffy motherboard.

SP3 is essential if you insist on still running XP. Additionally it offers some performance enhancements over SP2.
Windows 7 is not yet available, so you're currently stuck with running a pre release version (legally or not, but probably not recommended for most) or the release version illegally. Obviously that will change in just under 4 weeks.
-
And Windows 7 (inc the release version) does have a couple of reliability issues though they look driver related (even MS supplied drivers)

When at Uni i used to re-build my Windows laptop every 4-6 months, it was like an oil change, you knew when it was time to be done ;D
There will always be that on a google search, but i fully agree with TB and KillerWatt (and i hate to agree with KW ;D)
SP3 is fine, stable, and reliable, there will be other factors causing the problem.

Yup, XP does seem to start to slow itself down after a few months. Its possible to regain its speed with a lot of manual tweaking, but ultimately, rebuilding it is a damn sight quicker, easier, and ultimately more successful.
Vista is better in this respect, and I guess Windows 7 will be as well seeing as its just a tweaked Vista.
-
well my opinion is if you need to keep re-doing you computer then you are not very good, I have never had to re-do any of my computers unless a board has gone, they are never slow and they do what they are supposed to do, and in sp3 there is loads of junk files in there, you all onestly think windows is going to letting you run XP there are trying to shut it down why do you think windows 7 is out and Vista, and there is another one on the way. so you keep thinking its good, Linx is the best it's free you dont need to keep updating it in some way its better than XP win7 and Vista, no faults with it and it's hard for hacker to get into

Of course there will be issues on many older, half knackered installations - particularly those with hacks/cracks/bypasses around WPA/WGA. Remember SP3 came 4yrs after SP2 (a massive amount of time between service packs), and included well over 1000 patches.
That is not a reason to not install it. It needs to be installed - if your previous installation is naff, then it needs rebuilding.
SP2 in 2004 caused more problems, and to be honest, should be considered a new OS in its own right, as there we some fundamental changes behind the scenes.
SP1 probably caused the most grief though, due to Microsoft blacklisting 2 corporate keys that got well known (but were never used by the corporates they were issued to), causing virtually 100% of the hooky XP Pro machines out there to fail. Lawsuits were sent MS's way, until people realised that not only was it the 'back bedroom' enthusiasts using it, but many 'amateurs' building PCs for friends/colleagues/mini business, as well as actual shops.

Some of us use our computers for more than word processing, XP, if used well, will, without doubt need re-building regally to keep performance good.

Microsoft don't need to do anything - Mainstream support has already ended, which should get people moving off. Vista and Win7 are out, because MS is back on track with its std release schedule - Vista threw things off somewhat.
If you think that Linux is secure, or that it never needs updating, I suggest you keep well away from it, or get a subscription to the RedHat Network (RedHat probably have the best updating system out there). As to Linux being 'best', best for what? Its found a niche in embedded devices, and in low cost webservers. Its a poor desktop for consumers (can't see my mum coping too well with it), and utterly hopeless for corporates (as those who tried have found out) due to virtually zero managability.

Linx is the best
Feel free to educate the rest of us as to why any flavour of *Nix is better than anything else.
it's free you dont need to keep updating it
Being "free" doesn't make it better, and maybe the reason there are no updates is because no-one gives ashit about finding it's weaknesses to start with.
in some way its better than XP win7 and Vista
As above, please educate me as to how it's "better" than the current MS offerings.
no faults with it
How many items would you like me to list (hardware & software), that won't work under any flavour of *nix no matter what?
and it's hard for hacker to get into
*nix was proven years ago to be less secure than XP when both were taken "straight out of the box".
*nix only "appears" to be more secure than XP because less than 5% of the world population use it.
XP (by comparison) is used on over 90% of the world's computers. Now you tell me, what is going to be the better target if you want to cause mayhem?

Proper Unix most certainly does have its uses, particularly in workstation and large servers.
The entire *nix security model relies on not running as superuser (root), much in same way as Windows (Vista and later) stop you running as superuser (Administrator). Both are very susceptable user actions, and flaws in the OS that allow bypassing of that model.
Recently - last 3 or 4 years - Windows seems to have far fewer security warnings than Linux or OSX, and probably slightly more than proper Unix such as Solaris and HP-UX.

3 or 4 years??
When XP was compared to OSX "straight out of the box" way back in 2000, XP was proven to be the more secure of the two ;D
