Title: Someone is telling porkies!
Post by: Nickbat on 01 October 2009, 00:26:24
This is what really gets my goat. We're talking about the future of the planet here. That means our future and our children's future. Surely, there can be no more important issue.

But, someone is telling lies, either that, or they are talking out of pure ignorance:

COPENHAGEN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara warned on Wednesday the 2016 Olympics could be the last Games, with global warming an immediate threat to mankind.

It could be that the 2016 Games are the last Olympics in the history of mankind," Ishihara told reporters at a Tokyo 2016 press event ahead of the vote.

"Global warming is getting worse. We have to come up with measures without which Olympic Games could not last long.

"Scientists have said we have passed the point of no return," said Ishihara.

"...global warming has stopped and a cooling is beginning. No climate model has predicted a cooling of the Earth – quite the contrary. And this means that the projections of future climate are unreliable,” writes Henrik Svensmark, Professor, Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen

Now, I'm getting increasingly exasperated by all this. These are two diametrically opposing views. Which is right?

My own view is that we should take the latter more seriously for two reasons:
a) it is scientifically more likely, IMHO.
b) heat is less damaging to humans than cold, so the trillions the world's governments are currently spending on propping up the global warming hoax should be spent on ensuring we get through a cooling phase.

With Copenhagen (big global warming summit in December) coming up, the world needs to ensure that we are addressing the right problem.

I'm sorry to bang on about this, but I want my kids to have a good future.

Humans are pathetically poor at coping with extremes of heat or cold. We lead a very precarious existence. A global drop or increase in temp by more than a few degrees would have far reaching consequences.

We live in what I call the exponential society. Each DAY someone has to come up with something more amazing, earth shattering, faster, bigger, more economical, impressive and so on than yesterday. Marketing led of course. The scientists are just caught up in this. To do worthwhile studies requires gathering proper data over a representative time (say another 100,000 years). One big problem with that is that todays Eminent scientists will be well dead by then so feel they have to come up with something now!

i think we'll discover they're both wrong Nickbat -  they're the opinion of two lone nutters - i wouldn't put any stock in either  :y

Svensmark is no nutter, as you put it. You do realise that the Sun is at its quietest for 100 years and that cosmic ray intensities have increased 19% beyond anything we’ve seen in the past 50 years?.

i love you're so open to alternative ideas nickbat - does this rebelliousness colour other aspects of your life or just climate change?

anyway svensmark isn't a nutter but his "galactic cosmic ray" theory has been widely discredited ::) - theres little evidence that this is a cause of global warming  :o

as far as the earth cooling - that'll be interesting as we're coming out of an ice age (anytime theres ice on the poles, we're in an ice age)  ;D

time will tell...................

Now, I'm getting increasingly exasperated by all this. These are two diametrically opposing views. Which is right?

The very reason why a healthy degree of scepticism should be applied to the pronouncements  of the doom-mongering lobby - with Al Gore championing the cause this - to use that great US expression - should be a 'no brainer'?

You obviously haven't received Kofi Annan's chain letter yet, then, Zulu.  ::) ::) ::) ::)

..and from the same link:

"Every free download of the song will automatically add the listener's name to the petition that Annan will present to summit attendees."

With the downloader's permission? I understand that looks unlikely on iTunes...and maybe others.  >:(

So ....is global warming/climate change ...real and unimagined.....something that should concern us.....or is it as Nickbat suggests.......some rabid left  wing.........conspiracy theory?.
As Nickbat states in his post.........the evidence is pretty ambiguous really.

I would say that I fall .....into the real and unimagined category.....far more likely than not.......I would say.

But Nickbat ......has an unending list ....of scientists.......climatologists.....to prove otherwise......Or does he?.

I believe that Nickbat has "cherrypicked".....statistics.....and infomation......which fit his "theory".........from his lengthy list of "mavericks"........who sit at the edge of mainstream scientific thinking.

Of course......I could be wrong......as could Nickbat. :y :y :y

Two points.

Firstly, I don't believe the evidence is ambiguous. The point that I was making in my first post about (the future of the planet...who are we to believe etc.) was poorly written, I admit. What I was trying to do was get people really stirred up about this. I think the general public are sleepwalking to disaster, not through global warming, but through being hoodwinked into giving up freedom, technology, wealth and all the other things we and our forefathers have strove to achieve. I want people to take a look at both sides of the argument. I have and that's why I'm sceptical. Too many people just believe what they are fed in the papers and on the telly. They need to wake up. It will COST us (see this link from today):

"Adherents of the world's major religions have urged UN climate conference attendees in Bangkok to renounce short-term gains and greed, calling the reversal of global warming a moral duty.

They called for roughly £1.2 trillion a year from rich countries, more than double what they have included in the current negotiating text."

http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index.php/news/world/Religions-gather-to-urge-UN-agreement

So, if it will cost us huge amounts of money and the effective demolition of our economies and well-being,  is it not our duty and that of our government, to ensure that it is all based on fact?

What if this professor is right?

"I am of the opinion that this is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people."
Dr. William (Bill) Gray Professor Emeritus of Colorado State University on the manmade climate change theory.

Second point.
Do I cherry pick? Well, yes, but only to the extent that I generally focus on links which do not toadie to the man-made warming theory. If readers want such stuff, they need only read the Guardian or watch the BBC. ;)

I was having a reasonably pleasant afternoon, collected all the fallen leaves, cut the lawns - you know typical rural activity - good for the physique and the soul.

Then of course, after starting this session,  I followed your link to a paper where the names Annan and Milliband appeared in the same piece, well the peace of mind I had at the beginning of the session has suddenly evaporated - for which I must thank you!! ;D

Talking of that piece and it’s important to do so, should people wish to see an attempt at the widespread manipulation of the masses they could have no better example.
