ive been having problems with my d-link router as in setting it up onto the LAN socket was proving difficult, it turns out its the LAN socket thats "iffy", ive been looking on fleabay & it appears i have two options, one is a LAN p,c card or the other is the network adaptor route, is one faster than the other?, on the pci cards they mention 100 mbps & the n/adaptors state 54mbps, ive got to get something sorted as i dont know how long the blu-tak will keep my LAN cable in the correct position :o,,,,cheers :y

I would always go for wired if it can be done reasonably easily.
Wireless adaptor speeds are rarely attained in real-life for a variety of reasons whereas a wired connection will achieve the claimed speed 100% of the time.
Add to that the ease of setting-up, no need to enable security (indeed, no security risk if you don't have a wireless access point). Wired every time, if it can be done.

Yep, I have a wired set-up, there's more enough RF bombarding us to invite yet even more to do so at even closer quarters.

thanks for the feedback chaps, i guess i`ll be buying a LAN card then providing ive got a slot left to use, ive also seen usb adaptors that still need the cable so thats another option, its getting urgent now as my blu-tak gave way so ive jammed in a fag butt for now :D

I have wired setup for those machines which require faster speeds and lower latency (Skype phone, gaming and media) but they have to be near the router.
For my laptops they all have wireless on WP2 encryption with MAC filtering as they are for general usage and dont require anything super quick.
Doesn't stop next door's kid trying to hack in though... I might e-bomb him one day see how he likes it! ;D

Although I have 2 Wireless networks running in the house, a wired LAN is considerably faster

As far as general browsing/e-mail is concerned, you won't see the difference between 54G & wired LAN running at 100Mbps.
But to answer your question, it's wired all the way...and don't even think about those bullshit USB to ethernet adaptors.

Wired.
Faster,
More secure,
More reliable,
Easier to set-up (network wise) and configure,
Easier to repair/re-configure (although less need to!).
And points 1-5 again.

thanks all, i got the message loud & clear :y ive just bought a LAN card off fleabay [new] for 99p & £1-20 p&p so i cant grumble at that, mind you the fag butts doing a good job keeping me connected ;)

wireless is the easy option, no hassle. But i always prefer wired if i get the chance. Its faster, more reliable and more secure. Its just routing cables around the house which is a bugger.

Wired, every time.
I tend to use laptop on wireless, but thats for convenience.
