Title: Rear Brakes...
Post by: JesterRT on 06 March 2007, 08:06:25
...on a Vectra B ::)

I've been given my brothers Vectra for a week while he's throwing himself (head first no doubt) down some snowy slopes in France.  He warned me the handbrake was a bit 'dodgy'.  Well, it turns out that the handbrake just doesn't work, which means parking in gear all the time, or it could get quite embarrassing - running after your car on a petrol station forecourt (managed that trick once before in my Mk1 MR2 - also had a crap handbrake).

Now, I found a guide on Omega rear brakes on a certain other website (well Google's cache of it since it wouldn't load directly) and from what I read it's pretty similar to the Vectra.  Can anyone confirm that?  Was written by someone on here I think  ;)

It mentions adjusting the handbrake by shining a light into the drum and finding a star to turn - which hopefully will make a damn sight more sense when I have a wheel off at some point this week.  :)

Awesome!  Thanks...

Now, can someone tell me where is safe to jack up these Vectra's and drop them onto axle stands?  It all looks a bit soft under there  :-/

Not sure my brother would appreciate holes and dints in the floorpan  :)

Well, I jacked the thing up (couldn't find a forklift unfortunately - would have been a damn site easier.  Why don't car manafacturers put bloody great obvious jacking and support points under the cars!?) and took the wheel off.  Rotated the hub and shone the torch into the hole, but I'm damned if I can see a star type adjuster wheel.
I can see it in the picture of the Omega brakes, but this Vectra doesn't seem to have the same.  Are they the same?  I had the wheel off the Drivers side - anyone know what position (eg 12 O'clock, 3 O'clock etc) that the adjuster is found inside?

Cheers!

It's at 12 o'clock IIRC... but don't quote me on that!

The jackinh points on the Vectra are extremely obvious if you look at the bottom of the car.

As for the handbrake it operates on a small drum behind the rear brake disk......
