SWMBO was on her way home from work this afternoon, she'd come to a stop as the car in front was turning right ..... but the car behind her didn't!!! :o :o She was pushed forward into the car infront of her causing minor paint work to the front of her car & the back of the little Mitsubishi Colt in front. The back of her Astra however ....... the boot floor is substantially creased and the rear nearside door is fouling against the D post that has been pushed forwards up to it & there's now a huge gap between the nearside of the hatch & the rear near side quarter! :o :o :o
Perfect timing too as the insurance is up for renewal in less than a fortnight :-/ :-/ :-/
At least nobody died! :y :y :y :y
and while not trying to be a cliche ::) ..... she does have a sore neck/shoulders and a sore knee, presumably from where her foot was on the brake pedal.
The mother of the girl who went into the back of SWMBO's Astra says it couldn't have been that hard because there's not much damage to the front of her/their car. err? at least a bonnet, bumper & slam panel. :-X :-X
-
At least the wife is OK Andy.
-
Her Mother was in the car, well that explains it then ::).
At least SWMBO was generally OK and that's what counts Andy :).
-
Forget the mother of the other driver, your next problem is going to be when the insurance write back and say that your other half obviously realised the car was stopping (because she stopped herself)......but why did she stop so close that another car was able to shunt her in to the car in front when she would have had the handbrake on.
Before you go off on another "why are you finding fault with what I say" 'dangle berries', I ain't having a pop.
I'm just letting you know that insurance companies WILL find some unheard of shit and use that against you in order to attempt to reduce the payout.
PS
Maybe you should change the topic title, because not all women drivers are shit.

It sounds like quite an impact KW so how far away are you supposed to stop? because if every body in the queue left a huge gap, the last car in the queue would be in the next county ::).

Not had a sex change by any chance have we KW ;D.
-
im usually about 4 ft away from the car in front when i stop. id presume thats normal. unless its uphill im usually about 6-8ft behind.
-
so how far away are you supposed to stop?
I was taught (for test purposes) that if you couldn't see where the rear tyres of the vehicle in front were making contact with the tarmac, then you were guaranteed to fail (no such thing as "majors & minors" in my day, you either made the grade or didn't).
Now you may not think that's a very big gap, but try it tomorrow on your way to work (or whenever you drive next)....you'll be surprised at just how big a gap it is.

I won't go off on one cos ....... I do agree with you :-? ;) ;) . It was something I'd thought of when she got home.
She actually wasn't that close (obviously close enough :-/) but the car behind pushed her a good few yards up the road into the car infront of her. It wasn't a situation where anyone would have been expected to apply the handbrake.
The young girl was on her own in the car, but the car belonged to her mother, and it was her that rang our house to confirm her insurance details :-? :-? :-? and enquire how badly damaged SWMBO's car was. I think she seems to think there's only superficial damage to both cars, I think she'll be very surprised when they assess her car becasue as I say the boot floor of SWMBO's Astra is somewhat creased.
-

I was taught the same thing when I did my HGV test mumble mumble years ago.
-
It wasn't a situation where anyone would have been expected to apply the handbrake.
Whether you stop for one second, or one hour...the handbrake goes on....that's the rules when you take the test....they don't change once you pass.
Once again, not a pop (in case it reads that way).....that's the sort of shit the insurance company will try on in order to reduce the liability.
I think she'll be very surprised when they assess her car becasue as I say the boot floor of SWMBO's Astra is somewhat creased.
Boot floor is a crumple zone mate, certainly not structure.

She should get down to the docs and get checked out. Not condoning ambulance chasing in any way but mrs. KW had precisely the same accident, with same level of car damage, 8 years ago and has suffered back pain since. :(
I hope it doesn't come to that, but best be on the safe side. :y

Tyres and Tarmac, and it is quite a gap... :y
I was taught that this was to enable you to maneuver around the vehicle in front if necessary, rather than for leaving a reasonable gap in case of a rear end shunt..... :D :D

And thanks to you too Pete! ;) :y

as kevin said get her down to the docs or A&E
get it recorded in case of any whiplash
swmbo's neck still hurts after her rear ender in july
-

......
Will do! :y

Never good to hear someones had an accident but good news no one was hurt too bad. Even if your better half isnt feeling to bad I would also suggest a trip to the doctors just so its on record. Id like to think Im a good driver and I dont think I fall in the girl driver group, more of the mature woman ;)

I think it was just a case of her not taking any notice of what was going on. A witness - who stopped - said that she seemed to not make any attempt to brake!
Phone? :-/
In her own world? :-/
Listening to the radio/cd/etc? :-/

Advanced Test 1990.......... :P :P :P
As per Vamps, advanced test.
There are quite a few who think the advanced test is anal, but it makes you think a lot more about what you are doing (mainly because you have to explain what you do, and why you are doing it as you go).

Which is why I failed the Hazard Perception Test :-[ tiral test taken to support my 17 year old, it seems I got low scores because I spotted / anticipated hazards too early and certainly spotted more than expected, this is a totally unfair and crap thing for kids to be doing, how can I support him on this.... >:(
-
Which is why I failed the Hazard Perception Test
The hazard perception test isn't worth shit, never has been worth shit, and never will be worth shit.
The reason for that is quite simple....a computer (even with so called "real life" video footage) will NEVER be able to simulate real time human behaviour/actions/reactions/etc.

Agreed, but laddo has to pass it and I don't know how to advise him, test on Oct 7th... :( :(

This is getting eerie! :-? That's twice I've agreed with you tonight!
I've only done the tests from the CD/DVD that No 1 daughter had before she took her test, no advanced tests for me :-/ - but I thought all driving involved hazard perception :-/ :-/ :y

Not quite following you :-[ tests today require a Hazard Perception Test on a computer simulator... In the past, for advanced driving, you gave a commentary as you drove, much better, but might me hard for a new learner :-/ Try it to yourself, there are so many hazards that it is difficult to get them out verbally as you drive... :)
How did you get on with the cd/dvd test, I failed more than once..... :(

I looked at the hazard perception when Emily/no 1 daughter was looking to take her test, I passed ..... but only just :o. As you say, driving in general poses all sorts of hazards so it was difficult to tell whether you'd seen what was required of you, or whether you'd seen something else. :-/
I've seen the comentery that the likess of H21 would have been expected to give, and although I hope I would have seen all the so called hazards, it's not always easy to drive & comment at the same time ......
I'm sure women would fair better .... talking & doing something else does appear to be a lot easier for the fairer sex ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D :y

You think correctly.
All this computerised test shit is just that, it's shit.
I'm guessing you've been driving a number of years, now you tell me....all the shit you've learnt over your driving career......you reckon that can be taught in an hour watching a DVD?
Course it can't.
There is NO test that can make anyone a good driver, it's just one continuous lesson from the day we pass the basic test that proves we can start, stop, & steer....until the day we stop driving.

Sorry to hear of your wife's misfortune Andy, and I hope she recovers soon from what sounds like whiplash. :'( :'(
As for women drivers we are as good as men and KillerWatt is right to defend us- thanks!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :y
However, as a matter of coincidence I also saw the results in Ashford of a rear end shunt yesterday; a woman (yes!!! ::) ::) had driven her Corsa into the back of an immaculate Y reg. Jaguar (may have been a 4.2) and the male driver was not happy, desperately trying to sort out his bumper! Mind you it was the Corsa that had it's front well pushed in! :'( :'( :'(

As I titled the post I immediately thought of the women on the site & specifically put girl rather than women ::) ::) ::) ;D. The girl that shunted SWMBO was just that .... a young-ish girl. Obvioulsy thinking of things far far away, and not the road in front of her :y
-
Hey Andy. I hope all's good with your wife & there's no long term damage. Necks & backs are very easily damaged, she'll probably be in pain for a while & may even need regular trips to hospital. Lets hope not :y

Thanks for the concern. She has steadily got a little worse throughout the day, sitting at a PC & keyboard all day though won't help.
She called at our local GP on her way home this afternoon to just have her injuries recorded .... just in case. :y
-
SWMBO is really p'd off now! >:( >:(
As I suggested, looking at the deformation of the rear pillar/D post & boot floor, her car has been deemed a total wright off! Trouble is, we've only just found out 30 mins ago which means that she no longer has a car to go to work in tomorrow morning! It's a good job it's not too far away ..... for the other insurance company re expences.
This is the 2nd car she's had written off by someone else not paying attention to the road. :-? :-?

That's why I won't accept anything less than fully comp these days.
As far as the loan car goes, you should have told them to bring the cheque when they came to collect the keys if they are being that quick about snatching it back.

I've just had this conversation with our insurers.
They said I'd to send V5C, copy of MOT etc etc ......
Whoa! :-? :-? Untill you make me a satifactory offer it's still my car! I want at least an offer before I send anything to them! ::)

Too bloody right!

Well I hope all works out eventually Andy, as I have similar issues myself now, but due to a stupid male driver!! Arrgh!!!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(:'( :'( :'( :'(
The garage are picking mine up tomorrow at last as my insurance company Royal Sun Alliance have "given them authority to repair" whatever that does mean in reality!
Still expecting them to say those dreadful words they have said to you Andy; "write off"!!! :'( :'( :'( :'(

In my experience it means exactly what it says ... it will be fixed !!
When my old Granada was back-ended the Insurers "Approved Garage" said write off .. I said no-way and forced an Independent Engineers Inspection ... he said it was fixable, on his report the Insurers gave "Authority to repair" and the garage had to do the work even though they didn't want to !!! (The Independent Engineer had found some serious erors in their "estimates" and forced the repair price down big-time).
Due to the argy-bargy I arranged for the same engineer to inspect the car before I accepted it .... good decision ... :) Ended up having some jobs done again AND his bill paid for by my Insurers ... who then claimed some serious money off the other parties insurers !!

Thanks Entwood! :y :y :y :y
That is reassuring, and you have given us some good tips there :-* :-* :-* :-* :y :y
Maybe they will just carry on and repair it as you say Entwood as the other guys insurance company are not arguing anything and just seem to be accepting full blame with them even discussing with my daughter direct on what compensation they could pay her and my grandson!! Mind you they have no choice with two police witnesses both confirming he failed to stop before hitting my stationery car!! ::) ::) ::)
Incidently my daughter has told his insurance company to bug off as the AA have arranged for a specialist legal firm to take on the case for her. ;) ;)

The courtesy car arrived today.
A 2.0 diesel VW Passat 'auto' ... one of these DSG semi-auto's. I've just driven it about 10 miles or so to collect No 1 daughter who decided to 'surprise' us & come home for the weekend :-? and my initial reaction is ....... don't really like it :-/ :-/. If you give it a boot full from about 30/35 it takes off like a scalded cat but the drive is anything but smooth. A proper auto would obviously be smoother & you'd be able to drive a 3 pedal car a lot more smoothly too. I'm sure I'd not want one of my own
...... even if it does have 6 gears & does 30odd (so far) to the gallon. ;D ;D

You should have surprised her an been out, for the whole weekend..... :y :y
My Citroen semi auto is like that, very jerky changes unless you back of the gas as it changes up, I can live with it though.... :y Drove it in manual mode today, for about the first time, paddle gears, much smoother and loads more mpg.....
