Sadly, after quite a battle,i finally capitulated and agreed wifey should have a new car.
Well to be fair she's never asked for much and as wifes go is probably quite 'economic'.
She has been driving a 1.6lx Escort which we bought in 1995 from new and have kept quite well serviced but has seen much better days and although it somehow managed to get through the mot a few weeks ago i know the ball joints are iffy and when i took it out the other day it was wandering around a bit, plus i have given up 'chasing' the rust.
So with a 2k scrappage carrot dangling in front of us off we go around the showrooms.
Now wifey does about 1500 miles a year, she walks to work and goes to the shops once a week so i thought all we need is a metal box and 4 wheels.
We looked several times at such a car in the Kia Picanto which we could have got for about 4.5K,dont get much cheaper than that.We had a test drive and i sat in the rear 'seats' and now have a bad back.
Got to say that if all you want to do is go get the shopping and get yourself to work a couple of miles away then you probably cant knock it.
But i just couldn't bring myself to parting with any sort of money for a tin box on wheels really.
So i thought for another couple of grand we could probably get a 'proper' car that i could also drive (as i am 6'4" and lanky thats a big ask)and it could also then be our family car for trips out at the weekend, currently use my mig estate that scrubs up ok when i take all my tools out the boot.
Cut a long story short we looked at all the main dealers and have ended up buying a Corsa 1.2ltr 16v sxi, with air con and all the electric knobs.
To get the scrappage we had to take all details of the old escort to the dealers,so i rummaged through the files to find that in 1995 we paid nearly £9k for the escort, yep couldnt believe we done that.
So now, almost 15 years later,we have just got a much better spec car for £9.5k. (delivery end Nov - hopefully)
Now i should add we aint in the habit of buying new cars so this one has now got to last into our retirement and beyond.
Still cant work out how the price of cars has not changed for 15 years ?

This is true..........
In 1990 (Hreg).....a brand new Astra 1.8 SXI.....cost £13000......no air con.....air bags....etc..etc...Luckily....I bought it .........when it was only six months old ..........with 7,000 miles on the clock ......for £6400. :y :y

In fairness, an Escort is a larger car than Corsa, so probably best compared with Astra, which is a bit more expensive.
But, yes, car prices dropped dramtically at the end of the 1990s when the media were going beserk over 'rip-off britain', particularly on car pricing

In 1984 my dad bought a brand new Nova, £3500, bearing in mind my Rolls Royce was nearly £90k in 1986 and now the equivallent one is over £300k, the Nova would cost about £15k now. It only had a radio, no cassete (cd's not out). The moral is - cars in value are MUCH cheaper now than 25 years ago. :y
