Title: Last weekend I mostly be.....
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 14 October 2009, 21:41:50
....playing with big engines!

It was our diesel gala at the heritage centre and I was rewarded for all my effort with a little go!

That is 47292....a class 47 diesel loco.

Got to drive her from Loughborough to Ruddington and then back into the siding.....including 3 or 4 full power stints! (and some micro wheel spin!)

A train spotter I am not.....I am more interested in working on them and having the odd drive.

Anyway, an anorak would get filthy!

No but I know someone who missed riding in an HST at 148.5mph because it was his day off (he worked for SIG) and they set a new Diesel speed record - I had great fun then!

A friend of mine was a part owner of a 50, and I used to be a member of a group who bought some 55s, as another 55 owning group said 47s make good test loads and you have to be carefull when towing them over 100mph as you can break them ;D ;D

If me - not jealous - was involved in preservation big time pre marriage, was involved in rolling stock restoration.

47s are OK, but I am a big EE fan, also a Swindon fan, got a signed print by a very famous 9F owner as well :y :y

Also Mark now has a mummybus ;D ;D ;D ;D

It is OK we have a couple of 47s and a couple of 37s, the 37s sound nice. But I still like the Hall and the 9F.

I had great fun rubbing it in (pretty sure I was in IT then) - fancy him working for SIG on the IC225 project and missing the world Diesel speed record ;D ;D - I haven't been much over 125 on a train, and not much over 40 on a preserved railway :-X :-X :-X :-X

It is pretty interesting the people you meet on a railway.

A truely expensive beast to run!

Given a 47 was designed as a multi use loco, the 90mph speed limit (although I know of drivers who have taken them past the 100 mark) is of little issue on the vast majority of the UK railways, even less so in preservation.

A 55 was designed as a passenger loco and hence cant pull the same load all day long (without buggering an engine  ;D!)

Its the nice big Sulzer lump I like, plus the DandM brake setup is pretty interesting!

I still like the 20's though!

Biggest problem with the EE stuff is the rust.....they are the Leylands of the railway world. We have the EE preservation group on site who have an 08, 2 off 20's, a 37 and a 73. (note 20154 is a hell of an engine with a suspected 1200 bhp at the rails!)

Interestingly, we had a visiting 31 (from BAR) at the Gala, the driver (who I know well), drives these regularly on the main line and says that you have to knock the ETS off as you leave with a passenger train to get enough grunt to get them upto speed!
