Title: Super Dario
Post by: Banjax on 16 October 2009, 19:25:15
Belated congratulations to Dario Franchitti for becoming IndyCar Champion for the 2nd time (2007 & 2009) one of Britains greatest ever racing drivers (you should read "Dario Speedwagon - excellent biography)

Clinched the 2009 title by gambling on a fuel strategy that allowed for no safety cars and for the first time in 14yrs at the Firestone 300 - there wasn't any. ;D ;D ;D :y

Top bloke - can't help thinking that if he was English rather than Scottish he'd be a household name tho  :(

ts nothing to do with his nationality, the series he races in has a huge profile in the U.S. but nowhere near as big globally. It is very much in the shadow of F1,rightly or wrongly. :y

That was because Mansell already had a huge global profile due to his winning the F1 world championship the previous season/being an extremely exciting racing driver/being a whinging gobshite who was forever on TV whining about everything and everyone. If he had gone and won the Cart championship without doing F1 first his profile would have been dimilar to what Franchiti,s is now.
Of course theres nothing to stop Franchiti from moving to F1,but afaik he seems a bit reluctant ,which is understandable given the history of big names coming to F1 from U.S racing and quickly falling on their arses. ;)

he was in talks with an F1 team a while ago - unfortunately it was Jaguar so he had a look and decided, rightly, to stay in the states  :y
