Title: If I Had A Brain
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 24 October 2009, 18:38:22
I might Be Dangerous.

Just sorting and sifting. Ready to build my new PC.

Had allready boght a 1TB, then boght the Motherbord, but decided to add annother drive, this time a 1.5TB.

Was working out which way to set the boot drive as I was looking for the box with the new memory in it,and found a Maxtor 400GB, an IBM 500 GB, a Saegate 500GB and an IBM 9.1 LVD SCSI all brand new and still sealed in thier bags.  :-/

I really am getting worse.

I also have a 775 3.2 Ghz CPU plus Asrock AGP/PCi-e, DDR2/DDR3 Motherboard bought and never used.

Then I bought a Gigabyte EP45 Mother board, 4 x PC9500 Dominator  or Ballistix ram complete with a Q600 and a load of water cooling gear.   Never used that either.

It's nice that I have found it, but rather worrying I had forgotton about it all.

Am I going Mad.   (P.s. - There is no firking way I owe any of you any money  ;D ;D )

Unless the SCSI drive is a 320 with a 15K spindle, it ain't worth crap in the performance stakes alongside home user SATA II.

I'll give you £20 for the CPU, but I want £30 from you if I have to take the board  ;D ;D

Feel free to discuss further if you want rid.

I bought it just before moving home and not really had time to spend on it.  :-/

Cem, I have plenty of use for the disks, plus the 6 x 1TB that I have allready filled.

I am thinking of buying a rack mount case.
3. 5.25 + 1 x 3.5 external
7 x 3.5 internal with rails possibly to add more.

I have a small wall mount/floor standing rack unit that will take 2 off these cases and maybe a network hub (I have a couple of Netgear 24 porters floating arround.

So need to decide on board/cpu to make a server.  Same  for a gaming machine, then just a low running cost machine to surf the OOF and day to day stuff.

Will be adding 24 hour CCTV via a few small camera's and PC add in card in the near future as well.  I have a nice space in an alcove/wardrobe that the rack unit will fit in and will stop any potential damp building up over the years as one of the machines will allways be on.

1. for the server buy a quality big chasis with big cooling fans (really big not 8-10 cm type)  I have seen some examples , very good for 24*7..forget about rack type servers they need cooled systems room..(if you think for that)

2. for cctv  there are many card models but buy one with H264 codec software..so you wont need those disks and you can send them to me  ;D :y

ps: although it depends on personel preference, I prefer fix cameras (ie not turning) but zooming ability will be nice, and also depedning on the position sometimes wide angle models may suit better..(but sizes drop unfortunately)

Nice try cem.

I havent been involved with computers much over the last 4/5 years so it will be nice to start having a play again.

Starting to get organised now, even found some tools, and started finding my software. (at last)
