Title: Driving Licence Replacement
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 24 October 2009, 20:45:37
Just applied online, filled all the form out (including my brain surgury) paid the £20 and printed the form out.

Now I have to find suitable ID

The only 2 possibilities I have high lighted but have no idea at all where they might be.

Why are things never so simple for me.  :-/

(Taken from the Gov web site)

Identity documents

You must provide original documents. DVLA won’t accept photocopies or laminated certificates.

United Kingdom (UK) digital passports

If you hold a digital passport (the photograph and signature appear on the same page), DVLA can confirm your identity with the Identity and Passport Service. You don’t have to send your passport to DVLA.

When applying online you’ll be asked to provide your nine digit passport number allowing DVLA to confirm your identity.

If you apply by post, using the D1 'application for a driving licence', write your nine digit passport number and your signature in the 'confirming your identity' section of the D1 form.

Other types of identification

DVLA also accepts the following documents as confirmation of your identity. Unlike the digital passport though, you'll need to send your identity document with your application:

    * full valid current passport
    * National identity card issued by a member state of the European Community/European Economic Area (EC/EEA)
    * UK identity card for foreign nationals / residence permit or travel documents issued by the Home Office
    * UK certificate of naturalisation

Do not send in your passport if you need it within the next month. If this is the case you should consider delaying your licence application until you can send it with your passport to DVLA.

If you’ve reached State Pension age, you can provide originals of one of the following in your name:

    * recent (within three months) bank or building society statement showing your pension payment and National Insurance number
    * BR2102, BR2103 or BR5899 letter confirming your eligibility for the State Pension

UK birth and adoption certificates

UK birth and adoption certificates can also be used, however, as they are not absolute proof of identity, they must be accompanied by one of the following:

    * National Insurance card or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions containing your National Insurance number
    * photocopy of the front page of a benefits book or an original benefits claim letter
    * P45, P60 or pay slip
    * marriage certificate or divorce papers (decree nisi or absolute)
    * college or university union card or school record

If you don't have a birth or adoption certificate, or the one that you have doesn’t show your full name or country of birth, contact your local register office.

That would be fine if I could find them.  I may have to apply for new ones, which if takes over 21 days they refund my money and put me in a postion where they know I am not living at the address of my licence.  :-/

Being an old b'stard does have its advantages sometimes. Mine's still a paper licence and 2032 is when I'll be 70 so if I don't move or lose my licence or the EU doesn't get in on the act between now & 2032 I won't need a photo licence.  ;D  ;D

Cheeky buggers nicked the plastic holder they issued me with on the first photocard when they replaced the licence when I moved house.  >:(

If you send your nice plastic holder in, you won't get it back...

You now have to replace your photo every 10 years too, at your own cost (£40 I think).

The latest licences look like fake versions of the first photocard ones too as they are lighter and plainer...

I replaced my licence just this April. Did it over the internet, all they asked for was the driver number which I had. Also had to register with some government gateway system and licences came through to my home address in the UK.

Then found the old licence.  ;D ;D

A silly question on this point. I'm fairly sure that on my old paper licence it stated somewhere that you didn't need a licence to drive a particular vehicle as long as you were entitled to hold that licence. so as I'm entitled to drive all my groups till the day before my 70th birthday if I allow my photo licence to expire next year and then get stopped would I be guilty of driving without a licence or failing to produce a licence? Or has my memory failed me yet again? :-[

The charge would be "Driving otherwise than in accordance with a license", which would also be accompanied with an automatic charge of driving without insurance.

If you believe for one minute that DVLA will send you the reminder, you haven't just gone down in my estimation........you've tunnelled through the earth's crust and you are well on your way to the core.

Ah right, with you now.

Howeevr, I agree with Skruntie to a point.....they do advertise it (as you pointed out), but they don't make it obvious in any way, shape, or form (same as SORN...down to you to remember).

Confusing I know, suppose what I actually meant is that it was not listed with all the other licence charges.

they send reminders for Tax disks for which we pay for, so it should be that they send remiders for licence renewal.  :-/

Your's is valid till 2052 but if you look on the front of your plastic card bit, there's an expiry date. It'll set you back £17.50 to renew it!

I paid £20 online to apply for mine, still need birth certificate either way.

Also found out if I find my onld licence they do the change over for free.  So us being nostalgic and wanting to keep the old one will cost us £20 for our pink licences as a reminder. :-/
