Anybody have a blu-ray player ? What would you recommend ?
-
PS3 with optional remote. Good value when you consider that the firmware is flashable and most others (if not all) are not yet.
Oh yeah and the games are pretty good too :y
-
PS3 is way, way unreliable IMO (well, IMO and the thousands of other IMO's out there).
If you really want a BD player, then it's either standalone (£50), PC based (£50), or £150 for a PC based player/rewriter.

I use my PS3 alot and dont have any probs at all

1 in 200 consoles, or 0.5% not exactly common.
Big killer is lack of ventilation

360 consoles started with about the same error rate for the same time period the study was undertaken, didn't take long for the RROD to become a "standard feature".
You are right about the ventilation though, but that problem is down solely to the manufacturers trying to cram all that crap in to a small as package as possible (so it IS a design fault).

LG BD370 or BD390 :y :y

But that would kill anything, not just PS3s....0.5% I'll sleep a bit better now. Cant do without my BD films ;D

Most PS3 failures are due to overheating.
Another bit of advice I have read
After a hard game which really works the console, let it cool down a bit before turning off.
New to me but makes sense

The problem they seemed to suffer from seemed to be something to do with the soldering. Maybe brought on by the heat.

Same as the 360....gets hot, solder holding god knows how many SMD's goes soft, SMD lifts slightly...ergo, dry joint.
* SMD = Surface Mount Device (no pins, direct solder between device & PCB).
-
dont rate Sony stuff for reliabitily at all personally. I know a couple of people have had dry joint issues with various Sony products, and true enough, my amp(home cinema) started turning itself off and on rapidly, accompanied by the same click when it turns on. Took the cover off and had a wiggle of some of the components and was able to reproduce the problem by poking certain parts. Mate had a solder sucker and re did the joint. Its still going now.
Ps3 wireless has stopped working, but i've now connected it via ethernet and ignore the problem as its well out of warranty.
I would still recommend the ps3 for blu ray as the link relates to older units, its an impressive machine!
A stand alone unit? Some of the pioneers look good to me, but no direct experience of those.
Or are we talking pc drives?

The PS3 is pretty quiet as well - a good console
-
PS/3 looks to have not learnt from XBOX issues, and seems to be going same way. Idiots.
As to the original Q about BR players - Media Center (yes its Yankie). Must be the only system to play any format (assuming you have drive physically capable of reading the media), and is definately the best upscaler of SD content. Probably the easiest HDD recorder to use. Shows you all upcoming films on TV, rates them, making it easy to record (Win7 only). Obviously its a good photo viewer, and not a bad music player (uses Media Player for libraries, which sometimes isn't the best at categorising). And if you need a bigger hard disk to store all the stuff on, just add one with no difficultly. Oh, and with the right case, its quieter than Xbox/gayStation. And lastly, if you want to watch your recordings (or live tv, or listen to music/photos/videos/whatever) in another room, just plug an XBOX in as an extender :y

Shame - it needs the extra airflow that faster fans would give. Muppets.

You may as well get one, because regardless of what Sony say, you have a 2 year warranty on anything you buy in the UK thanks to Brussels.

retro fitted a 320gb hard drive and have never had an issue yet

And fitting a bigger hard drive, as mentioned, does not affect the warranty. 320gb in mine. :-)
