Title: Migration - any better?
Post by: TheBoy on 09 March 2007, 19:37:26
Since we've migrated to the new VM on the 3rd March, has there been a performance improvement? Worse? No different?

Obviously, ignoring the fact that the W2K3 host crashed 3 days ago...

All constructive feedback welcome.

Shoulda used BSD ;)

I haven't noticed much difference, but it's always been pretty fast for me, and besides the DSL connection here is kinda crappy at times so it's hard to make rational judgements.

LOL, yet to see an OS that survives a significant hardware issue ;)

Actually, thats a lie, a few years ago we had an NT4 server that some git had both drives in the mirror fail, and it kept running for days before it eventually BSOD'd....

Apart from when some of the backend management scripts run, it does seem to be able to process requests quicker than before, but obviously as I'm local, I can't really get a feel for what its like to you guys...

Some of the management scripts still cause massive resource utilisation, especially the hourly backup and the google submission scripts. Therefore, right at the top of the hour, there may be a slight delay as the hourly backup runs (runs as nice for anyone who knows Unix). The google submission scripts run early morning, so hopefully shouldn't be too busy then...

It does seem better, slight hesitation now and again.

Ah so that's why it was slow, other than that I think it's better  :y

Hourly backups  :o Surely we dont need that....imo its only a forum and not major critical if we lost the last 24hr posts....why not just backup in the middle of the night.....altho Chris seems to do his fixing at this time and might find a slowdown if he needs help  ;D

Once an hour, the forum is backed up to another area of the disk, and also FTP'd to the Windows host.  Overnight, Windows backs this FTP backup to tape.

There are advantages to regular point in time snapshots, other than pure restore capabilities ;)

I'm getting some serious cold shouldering at the mo, so trying to limit my through the night missions for now  ;)

Never had any probs accessing the forum at anytime to be honest, although since your migration I find it quicker to post and live preview etc...  :y

Actually the only time I find it a tad slow is when I use the "back" button.....

Thanks for the comments - it gives me an idea of how it is running. I get a false view here due to a fast connection to it.
