one of the most highly respected journalists in the world working on the most fair and balanced news outlet on the planet - i'm sure we'd all concur so no need to worry about the messengers Nickbat, unimpeachable.
imo its the same flawed arguments - lets look at a small window of history and extrapolate from that that the earth is cooling - its an upward trend, of course theres dips and flats in the graph but zoom out 150yrs and its plain to see - theres lies, damned lies and statistics - i could prove using edited highlights that Man Utd cannot pass the ball 8-)
usual paranoia, misinformation and bad science from the sceptics
other than that - splendid! Lord whats-his-name is quite engaging ;)

Thats nothing in terms of climate, how about 450,000 years ::)

And of course all that Co2 were pumping is having a disastrous effect on Neptune http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2007/05/08/neptune-news/

......you may well have missed the point here bj.
I have said on many occasions that the present clamour over climate change is being used as a cudgel to smash the present conceptions of ordered international boundaries and sovereign nations.
The very real threat to each and every one of us is the push towards the ‘New World Order/Government’ and this is the factor in this elegant and audacious plot that is most deserving of close attention.
Climate concern has been very successfully used to obfuscate the true intent of the UN and similar bodies in order to provide the path of least resistance to this goal. Many means are employed in the manipulative attempts to guilt many people into submission - witness - from UN Earth Summit Brazil 1992:

...and how she progressed;
http://weightofsilence.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/the-girl-who-silenced-the-un-for-five-minutes/
The mere fact that Kofi Annan has seemingly employed her services should be enough to promote suspicion.
The reasons over such concern for climate change and the seemingly unending will to ram them down our collective throats are many - some justified, many not - the real reason that this matter is being given such precedence, in my view, is that it provides a doorway through which the march to world government will be made.
I have a feeling that the world’s climate will be able to look after its own interests whilst we, the inhabitants who depend on it, will be too busy tying ourselves up in guilt and hand-wringing, as a result of this bare-faced manipulation, to notice that there's not a damn thing in real terms we can constructively do about it.

In the timeline of planet earth, man has been on it for a microsecond, and has has been industrialised for a lot less time. Yet we are destroying the planet, Yeah of course we are.
What is detroying man is his arrogance, in that we think we have the power to change the planet, we do not. The planet has the power to change us for good.
The problem is most of the people in power today grew up in the hippie generation and are still spaced out today. It will change again in the next twenty years when the generation of punk rockers take over and again it will change when the 90s selfish generation take over in about 40 years time. Thank someone I won't be around for that one.

He mentions the new U.S. healthcare initiative that Obama ............is rightly trying to push through.
Apparently........... forty million Americans have no health insurance....(is the U.S....a third world country?.)
There is obviously much opposition to this.......usually ...in the form.........of good living.....pot-bellied Republicans......who only ever think about how much extra............ they must pay in taxes to help support ....what they see ......as the... American underclass..........trailer trash.....for want of a better word.
Yes.........the American people will probably .....have to pay more tax ....in order to fund the Obama proposals.......but he is a Democrat.....so it should be a priority for him. :y :y :y

Yes it should be a priority for him and was one of his big election promises, however, as most Democrats do, he is letting the Republicans stall and water down the public option so much that it is now unlikely there will be a public option. The U.S. House and Senate are so wrapped up in lobbyists from big business that little real change occurs. The pharmaceutical lobbyists pump in around $700,000 a day to make sure that the politicians vote the right way, the right way for them.
To run for President you need obscene amounts of money, money which comes from big business, banks and the like. They ain't gonna invest without some return, so 'He who pays the piper, calls the tune'.
Don't expect any real change from Obama, a different mouth but the words we've all heard before.

I have seen the light Nickbat.......have had a sort of cathartic experience...............in just six minutes and fifty two seconds......the man at the blackboard.(Mrs Thatcher's advisor ::)......has sorted out the whole Global warming Scam ::)..........in such a simple way ........that even Americans can understand. ::) ;) ;) ;)

That makes sense from a British cultural perspective (if British culture still exists?) but from a U.S. cultural perspective it is quite alien and I dont think that should be dismissed lightly.
The whole mindset in the U.S. is very much if you want something in life you work and save for it and what Obama is proposing is to them something close to communism. It is only natural that it will be treated with a great deal of suspicion. The U.S citizens without insurance arent totally excluded from health care so the figure is a little bit of a red herring.
Whatever they end up with I hope for their sake that they dont closely model it on the 2009 style U.K NHS, ;)

....am inclined to agree on that but would add that I consider Obama to hold the potential for being one of the most divisive Commanders in Chief in recent history.

I believe it,s possible he will do similar damage to the U.S. as B.liar did to this country. He appears to me to be cut from the same cloth. ;)

And I agree Albitz........but a compassionate society also has to help......the less able........and the weak. ;) ;)

I also belive that a country should care for its genuinely needy optomist, but the mindset is deeply entrenched in the culture and if it is to be changed it will be a rocky road.
If they look at the affect of our efforts to be caring and help the weak via our welfare system, they may see that it not only de- motivates the people who are having their earnings taken in tax to pay for it,but also has the same effect on the people who receive the benefits. They dont need to work or save if they want it,just learn how to play the system.I hope for the sake of their country that they strike a much better balance than we have. ;)

....I’m inclined to agree with most of what you say Opti - inflammatory language aside. There seems to be a strange dichotomy in the attitude to health care provision in the US which may have had unintended consequences;
http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=are-firefighters-raising-healthcare-2009-09-04
...can this be the only option - surely not?
The most urgent consideration should be of course can these proposals be funded in the light of other government spending?

So what would be so wrong with world government?? Countries would still have their own leader but be part of a bigger contigous picture. There would be an end to warfare (unless it was against aliens)and its wasted billions every year and an end to hunger. At the moment we have an absolutely toothless UN that in most instances cannot even agree to make a resolution against a warmongering or dangerous country.
Just think about it. People object to spending a few billions to protect our earth from a perceived or imaginary warming threat but no one seems to rail against the vast , absolutely VAST waste of money on weaponry and war every year of all of you are lives.

Everything V.
There is a vast difference between the utopian ideal of having a world united under one government and the practical realization that this could never be expected to work in any reasonable manner.
I thought that similar arrangements were in place already with bodies such as the UN and the EU, there doesn't seem much common consensus towards togetherness at the moment despite the vast amounts of finance each of these two examples require to function.
There would be an end to warfare (unless it was against aliens)and its wasted billions every year and an end to hunger
...there will never be an end to war V - a great ideal but never achieavable due to the variable degree of human nature.
We, each and every one, have our own individual view of how we sit in the social structure of this planet - and how we want to experience that placement to our satisfaction – and also in our hopes for our individual future.
The notion of a world order/government can rapidly sour when one considers how dissenters to the new arrangements would have to be dealt with. I would suggest that any such dissent or objection would be very harshly attended to, should they not be then overall control would be lost.
The new world order would be obliged to be pejorative and dictatorial to enforce a common will among the many disparate nations, and peoples, of the world – it’s the only way it would work.
I don’t know about you V but I’m not prepared to give up my individual freedoms just to satisfy the misguided desire for a world united under the governance of people who have an agenda that may be far removed from the benevolent.

The world would be in turmoil T - just because there was an absence of armed forces it doesn't follow that there would be an absence of violence or the need to protect ourselves from the threat, or otherwise, of it

Where men are, war is, unless controlled by authority and the common soldier, but even then there will be war to protect perceived liberties, freedoms, rights and life its self, and against aggressors.
As my favourite philosopher stated:
,".......during the time men live without a common Power to keep them all in awe, they are in a condition which is called Warre; and such a warre, as is of every man , against every man. For WARRE, consisteth not in Battell onely, or the act of fighting; but in a tract of time, wherein the Will to contend by Battell is sufficiently known: and therefore the notion of Time, is to be considered in the nature of Warre; as it is in the nature of Weather. Hobbes, T. Leviathan Penguin (1651) pp.185 & 186
Or put another way: "Without a ‘common power’ which “keeps them all in awe” as Hobbes proposed risks continual “warre” with man against man, but in between such times there is peace. During this no development of mans true worth can transpire, with “continual feare and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poore , nasty, brutish, and short” Hobbes, T. Leviathan Penguin (1651) p. 186
Therefore I believe that the universal soldier will have to exist for many centuries to come, if not for eternity. ;) ;)

Dissent?! There wouldn't be any dissent. We would just turn up at the feeding machines each day, put in our Biometric Id card and non dissenters would successfully get their muesli bar and a drink assuming they had done a days work.
As for everyone having a view of where they sit in the social structure. So long as X factor is on each week and the machines kept churning out muesli bars (chocolate flavour on Sundays) then most - 99%+ wouldn't give a damn.

...ultimately V that very scenario isn't an unreasonable assertion. Don't forget, Pol Pot tried to achieve a similar result in Cambodia, by slightly different means of course, but nonetheless the overall desire was to have a subservient populace totally dependant for existence on the governing elite.

I have tried to argue against your point of view Varche, hoping that in fact the individual self will always look after their own interests when they come under threat.
However Varche, it pains me to say, that I think you are absolutely right!! :y :y :y
If these types of threads here on the OOF are to go by, given they cover a cross represenatative slice of human life, we have just 10 members posting their comments and showing some form of interest in Nick's original message.
I really do dispair at times on here, as no doubt some of you do as well, and wonder why we bother! All right not everyone can stomach politics, but surely there are more who want to express their concerns, annoyance, pure anger, etc, as rightly Nick does on environmental issues??
Perhaps no eh? Providing Corrie, X factor, or Deal or No Deal is on the world's ok?
Give me strength!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Rant over? NO!! More to come, unless I give up trying to contribute to this site, which in the mood I'm in is a distinct possibility!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Give me strength!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Rant over? NO!! More to come, unless I give up trying to contribute to this site, which in the mood I'm in is a distinct possibility!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
....on the first part Ms Zoom - splendid, on the second - please put that thought from your mind :-* :-* :-*

this maybe sums up your feelings Lizzie :( :y

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show
And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
