Used to do a fair bit of PC gaming some time ago in the Duke Nukem/Quake/Doom/etc and was, even though I say it myself, quite good. Times move on, however, and now realise that a PC is not really a gaming machine and that other devices do the deed much much better.
Thinking of getting back into it again, now I have some extra time on my hands (and a humungeous flat screen telly!) so lloking for some advice.
Xbox versus Playstation? Which is dearer/best/most reliable?
Heard that the xbox is the 'better' device but thought I would seek more adult opinions rather than a straw poll of some of my younger neighbours..... ;)
-
See the xbox elite at PC world for £199 including the latest game or three...
-
Personally I've got the 360, plenty of good games, live is well thought out but costs about £30 a year for the full fat version.
You can link your 360 to your pc to play videos/music on the tv very easily.
Most new games come out on all 3 popular console formats so less limiting than it used to be in the xbox/ps2 days and as a bonus Duke Nukem is downloadable on the 360 if you fancy a bit of nostalgia.
-
So you vote for the X-box then Cap'n??
-
Indeed B, as would my Gnome the xbox modder extraordinary.
The 360 suffered from the famous red ring of death which they have now acknowledged is down to poor manufacturing and have increased warranty to 3 years for this issue along with modifying the chipsets etc to cure it on the newer boxes.
-
In that case, what version is recommended? Elite or plain vanilla white one....
-
New ones should all be the newer Jasper chipset according to his lordship.
Biggest difference is the elite comes with a 120Gb hard drive premium comes with a 60Gb and the arcade only 512Mb. The storage comes in handy for running the game from the HD and not wearing your dvd drive out even though the disc must be in to play and for storing any downloaded content etc.
Elites being black may look better in your living room decor than the white units.
Your next choice will be ethernet or wireless connection to your router, ethernet you just need a cable, wireless you need the xbox wifi adapter to stick in the back (about £60).
I'd recommend a play & charge kit for your controller rather than muck about with aa batteries, then you can recharge the controller whilst you play by plugging into any usb socket (on the console or a pc).
-
Thats the trouble, by the time you have the bells and whistles added, you could get a PS3 which has better graphics and blue ray capability
-
I think technically, the gayStation should be the better machine, but (and forgetting its sony for a sec) I've yet to see any game that really is "wow!".
Xbox more established.
Be aware, some places are still selling older xboxes - you can tell through box by power requirements, without breaking seal. Reject any that aren't the very latest 'Jasper' ones. They fail.
BUT the decision is based on what games you wish to play. If you've got your heart on Halo3, a gayStation ain't much cop. Also, for online gaming, xbox is more established as well, but not free. gayStation has bluray player - not the best, but does the job. xbox does do MCE extender.
Hmmm....

Don't believe it - I bought one from tescos about a month ago that wasn't even the pre Jasper HDMI one. It was the original type. Needless to say, it went straight back.

True but if a cable run to the router/hub is feasible it's always going to be the better and cheaper option than wireless.

Thats the kind of snippet of info I'm looking for.

I use a wireless router but running a cable behind the sofa is not a problem.... ;)
-
wireless does add latency for online gaming, not ideal...
-
As to a blueray player, my DVD player is that already so don't need another, unless the gameplay needs an inbuilt one??

other simialr sites - google "how to identify xbox360 jasper without opening the box"

should add, there are some xbox 360 models that have wrong stickers for psu requirements on, there is another site that details that. Have a good google :y

Don't discard the ps3 idea. Work out which games you fancy, thats the starting point :y

PS3 is turning out to be pretty unreliable, now seeing very high number of returns.
It is quieter than the sometimes bloody noisy xbox though!

The baddy in me would probably be going for the shoot-em-ups rather than the nicey-nicey world domination types. Possibly some of the racing games but, to be honest, had my share of the 3D real deal version with assorted blood and snot for added 'realism'.... :-X

All Jaspers (and Falcons) have hdmi port. hdmi cable is £2 of egay ;)

Read the reviews on Uncharted 2 and see what you think - I am on chapter 4 on the second play - that good I am playing it again straight away on a harder difficulty.
As above look at the games.
-
First play around 1200 bad guys killed :o :o
-
To be fair as they say the ps3 should have the better graphics but for some reason most of them have better graphics on the 360, Yes you have to pay for the online gaming side but it has more stable online play than the PS3 and is more user friendly.
My PS3 is now only used as a blu ray player

I've got a magnetic Travel Scrabble, hasn't let me down in 25 years
.....and it's in a box.....

i'm lucky (or sad?) enough to have had both consoles for a while now and i agree with martin uncharted 1 and 2 really are superb - even the missus has completed both games and played them through again immediately after :y
ps3 is well built and very quiet, 360 has been back to microsoft and replaced - although to be fair they were excellent - absolutely no fuss when it went ;)
360 is better online but you pay, ps3 is free....for now - i think they're planning to charge soon tho :(
360 plays DVD's, PS3 plays DVD's and BlueRay :)
90% of all games are available on both consoles, but stuff like the excellent Forza series and Halo are 360 exclusive while the PS3 has brilliant, clever games like Little Big Planet and Uncharted :-?
if i had to choose one console i'd say i do use the 360 more but theres really not much to choose between them, either console is a powerful and excellent games machine so theres no right or wrong answer - check what games you like and whats available only on one console :y

Where do you get your figures from, as the trade pubs covering the retail channel say they are seeing much higher than that, around 10% (which is on about a par with xbox dreadful reliability in the first 2 years).
-
The figures BBC used, they did work out at half a percent on one in 200.
Anyway Brucie what sort games do you like?
The children love Little Big Planet. As well as Uncharted series I also like Assassins Creed (triple format title).
As to play value - I took about 18 hours on Normal on UC2 and about 40 hours on Assassins Creed, but that was more repetative.
Can't see anything about charging for PSN.
-
for me its the ps3 every time :y
-
I'm lucky I have both and never had a prob with either the xbox is now 4 years old never failed and ps3 2yrs and stll as good as the day I got it ( fingers crossed)
each system is good and should be given a fair go there is no right or wrong answer
so get the system that you want and as most games are availabe on cross format it won't matter. Unless there is a specific title that you desire
just my 2p worth

That's Sony's figures, which the trade are heavily disputing. It would appear they are the figures for warranty (ie first 12 months), possibly including those taking up Sonys overpriced £150 repair offer

Bit the bullet today - Santa arrived early. ;D
Got a 360 with 250gig drive, two controllers etc etc as COD3 for a little over £200 from a local games shop. And its the latest Jasper chipset, box built only a month or less ago.
Been having a play with it this morning. Like the downhill snowmobile bit.... 8-)
Taking time to get used to a console control system though. Always been PC based before, so multi funtion mouse and a couple of keyboard hotkeys.
Good fun though! Thanks for all the advice. Appreciated. :y

Xbox can be useful for other things too, Media Centre extender, Sky Player, worth considering if its hooked up to your main TV.
Get yourself COD4, the graphics are a huge improvment! Better still get COD4 MW2, and have a few games with me online ;) ;D :y
The single player is also the best of the series, set in modern times :)
-
My mistake. Its the just released COD4 MW2.
As to online gaming, long way from that yet.... ;D

Ahhh excellent, must admit, MW2 single player is a lot more in your face than the previous version, not quite so tactical :( - Graphics are a step up though, really are good.
Forum record appears to be 2.5 hours to complete, i was 6! :o
