Title: My (Your) Car History
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 31 October 2009, 23:53:45
Just thinking through some of the cars I have had.  Maybe missed a few, if so, will edir later.

Viva HA Van
Chrysler Alpine 1400
Hillman Imp (Project-Never completed)
Chevette (1256-Stage 3 Tuned)
2000 Sportshatch Cavalier
Astra GTE
Sylvia Turbo
Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Auto
Ford Escort Van (Business)
Granada 3.0 Ghia Auto
Jaquar 4.2 Auto
Viva 3 Door
Honda 550 (P) Yosh 4 into 1 pipes and cams, sounds bloody awsome (same I hadnt passed my test)
Camaro SS (5.7) Auto
Opel Kadet 1200 3 Door
Pontiac Pariesienne (5.7) Auto
Cavalier 2000 4 Door
Mini 1000
Opel Manta Coupe
Fiat Uno
Carlton Cdi 2000
Carlton Diplomat 2000 Auto
Omega 2.5 GLS (4 Door) Auto
Omega Elite 3.0 (4 Door) Auto

Astra GTE was a Brand New B plate for Aug 1st.  Had so many problems it put me off Vx for a while.  P/X'd it for the Sylvia I saw in the showroom.  Lost £20.20 on the Astra with 8000 miles on it  ::)  Had the Sylvia from new as well, had the Daimler S/H at the same time, Sold the Sylvia to buy a business,

Only had 2 Fords.

Grandad was a P/X for the Daimler as part of a business purchase.  No Reverse, had the heads rebuild, tosser who did the deal didnt tell me the HG was failing on one side.  Had a new exhaust fitted, (They didnt clip a fuel line back in place) car caught fire and burnt out the same day.  :-/

Van got nicked to do a robbery and was found wrecked in a field 2 days later.  :-/

Pontiac Pariesienne was by far the fastest thing I have ever ownded or driven or been a passenger in.  (and the list I have deiven or been is long, inclluding the last of the lotus esprit turbo, cossies, ferrari daytona, 260 bhp Stage prepared HS etc etc)  Never did find out what the mods/cam fitted were  ::)

Viva was a 3 door, bought it for peanuts, put a pair of 3 series BMW steels with Mud and snows on it, by far the best thing ever for the 87 snow drifts/fall, used to go out looking for deep snow just to have a play.

But looking down the list seems I have allways been a Vx/GM fan more than any of the others.

Cars (Wish List)

Allways fancied owning a Senator or Carlton GSI
Tempted for an Elite Estate 3.0 or 3.2

Fancy somerhing small, nippy/agile like a road/rally prepared 4wd (nissan did one cant remember model thogh) or a VR4

Still wany a 400 Ci Transam/Fire Bird (Smakey and the bandit)

When the Elites run dry, was fancying a 300C, not so sure now, so choices seem to be Lexus (Merc/BMW)

That's 2 of us that's addmited to having a Chrysler Alpine Mike. :-/

I had a 1400 with a duel choke webber on it.

85 mph flat out with a tail wind giving a helping hand.

The HA van was quicker off the mark and top end, even hand better (had it on 2 wheels on the odd occasion seeing how far the grip went (Michelin tyres at that)

;D ;D strangely enough we didn't use Volvo at the time.

For speed and cover we used a range of  unarmoured vehicles - Toyota, Fiat, Datsun/Nissan, Chyrsler, BL to name but a few.

When I needed armour it was usually Ford but in the early days it was the Landcrab, later in the run of course the Omega came into service, MV6 manual for the plebs and Elite auto for the toffs. ::) :y

By the time I was using these cars the days of having to take armoured Land Rovers were long gone.

LOL -- I remember one trip, from Worthing to Taunton, in the 850 cc mini:  Just this side of Salisbury the exhaust manifold split, taking the accelerator return spring with it. So I travelled the last part of the journey on full revs with effectively no exhaust system!!!

It might have been a simple, old fashioned, engine, but it survived (many modern blocks would have gone to engine heaven in short order).

For a few miles I had an 850 cc hot rod -- complete with real flames !!!!!

I've had minis, I remember in a mini show I went to there was a competition to guess how long an engine would last at maximum revs. They gave up after a couple of hours cos it just kept going!!

Had a grey import 1.8 model (it was a 1999 version).
A bit agricultural under the bonnet, but a lovely 130bhp engine - lots of toys inside, but the finish was a bit old fashioned. Huge boot, lots of room for front passengers. Very reliable, but parts were sometimes expensive but never difficult to get. Good value for money - I enjoyed it - did consider one of the newer ones recently but settled on the Omega - the V6 auto coupes were too pricey for me. :y

Also - watch out on the early Coupe V6 manuals - the clutch was not up to the job, and suffered premature failure. Later models and replacements have an upgraded part, so should be okay. Autos & selectronic obviously don't suffer this - Original clutch would typically last less than 50k :(
Also, the alarm on early models (2002+ shape) was fitted by the UK importer rather than the manufacturer - the company that made the alarm has now gone bust, so if they fail (and they do!), it's a complete replacement as spares are not available - it interfaces to the locking ECU, so means new remotes etc. :(

Looking at some of these histories, many love their big engines....

Who has the highest average cc?
(add all cubic capacities together, divide by number of cars to give average)

I think the Mr Skruntie might do well with the Nascar pace car, etc

Mine is a humble 1160cc  ;D  ;D

headnt paid attention to the 6R4 or the RS200 on the 1st couple of reads.   :-/

Not wishing to put my foot in it or speak out of turn, but are the dates the year of manufacture of the car ? If so, every RS500 was made in 1986 and sold in 1987. Had mine for 4 years until some enthusiast relieved me of it  >:( and was quite well up on this particular model.. No offence intended...  ;) I also well remember with amazement the Lotus Sunbeam. When I was sponsoring Ray Stringer he had one, I thought I would embarrass him when we hit a long stretch of straight...... at 125mph he was still sitting right beside me, ok bits of it were flapping in the breeze but..  :-[

I love my elite, but my RS500 was the joy of my life, ' even including, any one, of my 3 wives ' ?? Just for interests sake : < i ran the car for 9 months i brought the car with a blown engine and rebuilt it it was a 1987 ybd engine and i rebuilt it to ybg spec 340 bhp > The ybd engine produced 224bhp in standard form, wasn't the ybg engine reduced to 220bhp as it ran on unleaded and had an extra cat fitted to accomodate the yanks ?

yes 220bhp standard spec due to extra cat, however sports cats chip and turbo pressure increase saw power up to 340 at the flywheel around 300 at the wheels i think if memory serve me well
