My Aldi air compressor says use SAE30.
Can I use Vx Semi-Synth 10/40 in it, or will it bugger it up.

I've got a feeling compresser oil is it's own special sort of beastie - a bit like diff / gearbox oil used to be.

Yes, you're probably right, Machine Mart sell 5 ltrs for about £16.
-
Careful AA you know what happens to people who start oil threads. ;D

Ask the expert....MJ will know :D ;)

I know absolutely nothing about compressors but surely they're just like an engine running at lower speeds, lower temperatures and with no nasty combustion products to get rid of. I'd have thought engine oil would work fine. Special compressor oil is probably exactly that sold with a price markup. I wouldn't have thought the viscosity is too critical either.
Same as lawn mower oil. Mine gets treated to the same synth I put in the cars for less money than the "mower oil" you can buy at garden centres which is a straight grade 30 viscosity mineral oil sold for 5 quid a litre.

Semi synth works in mine.....
Although I suspect you are talking with regards the need to add an oil feed to the compressor tools....?
-
Some compressors can be really fussy (oil free, screw type etc) but ye olde Aldi ones are reasonably robust, unless they have changed the style/design?.
My Aldi one is a year or two old and, to be honest, is still fine. Have topped up with semi synth as required with no probs.

To clarify,
You use Vx Semi in the compressor for its own lubrication?
What would you recommend for the air tools themselves?
-
Should be a light oil for the tools. I tend to use a drop of 3 in 1 or sewing machine type oil. Nothing heavy and NOT WD40.....

I use a 3in1 oil as its thin.....the Aldi air compressors wont be to fussy abouy oil as they are only rubber diaphram affairs and are very unlikely to be piston units...

Presumably the same for my cheap compressor - looks very similar to the Aldi one...

The Aldi air compressor has a piston, connecting rod, crankcase and a crank.
So does that mean it will be fussy about what oil you put into it?

It comes with a parts explosion diagram.

Ah.
Mind didn't, but looks similar to Aldi one, wouldn't you say?

Nothing like the quality, though ;D

Yours was a 'cheap' one wasn't it? ;D

You mean they give you a diagram off how to put it back together when it explodes!? :o

I wondered when you'd be along, lowering the tone of a very intellectual thread ::)

Yes, cheaper than the Aldi one....

I try AA...sometimes very trying ;D
Mind you ....i bet yours is cleaner than TB's ::)
-
So did we decide it would be OK to bung Vx Semi Synth in it?
-
I think we did AA. Mark and Broocie both use it in theirs without probs.
-
thank you
