Is there any reason why Vaux/ Opel went for the old style mileage counter as opposed to the digital type? Just wondering is there was a reason behind it.

Do you mean to save money?

Do you mean to save money?
Yep. Why else? ;D
-
And yet the Vectra had a type of illuminated mileomemter thingy.
-
suspect because the Omega was too old up upgrade to CanDi

Sounds a bit tight. Why make such money saving measures in your supposedly flagship car.

As Tunnie said, it's not just a case of putting a new dial in. It has to be fed with a signal, which means upgrading the electronics etc. Money.

Although facelift had a huge update in spec and trim, don't forget its actually a 1993/4 design. (forgetting the 80's LCD Senator/Astra dashes) most had dials. When the facelift came in, was prob too big cost wise to upgrade some core leccy stuff

Fair enough. There still tight though. ;D

In the years before it went into bankruptcy, GM was burning through $6Billion a year. It's only the fact the the US government pumped billions into it, and cash for clunkers, that's kept it going this year. When everything settles, it will be in deep, deep sh!t again.
-
But dont forget that, with the exception of the sender unit, the Senny/Gsi24/Astra GTE dash units were digital replacements of analogue - i.e standalone units & not fully integrated.
The very last of the Mk2 Astra GTEs had analogue dash units as standard as there was a very high warranty failure rate. I had a B reg GTE and had 2 replacement dash units withn 6 months.

Yep, they were cr@p. So why put them into a miggy.

Digital LCD odometer is cheaper than mechanical.

Not if you've got 100,000 in stock.

Digital LCD odometer is cheaper than mechanical.
As a dash, but not cheaper to upgrade core systems from an early 90's design

Nothing to upgrade, you have a digital speed signal and a main circuit board.
I reacon you could get an LCD odo for about 2-3 quid in volume....which would be less than a mechanical item
You dont need CAN for digital odo.....as Vectra B proves

I stand corrected - But if thats the case, why did they not fit one? If no upgrades where needed? Surely they could have reduced costs by producing a larger version of VeccyB one? :-/

It would be interesting to know how much of it is down to type approval....and how much hassle there is with changing such an item.
There will of course be tooling costs to consider which will already have been spent out on for the original mech setup.
Tooling is BLOODY expensive

You should all have the joy of experiencing the Mercedes white dials, with digital readings, in the latest 'E' class. Superb in the extreme and readable in all conditions :-* :-* :-* :-* :y :y

Shame its all cobbled together with gaffer tape and paper mache and about as reliable as a plumbers estimate ;D

I think it might be an image thing - the Omega dash does look quite refined, some digital dashes look pants

Easier to clock (sorry I mean 'apply mileage correction) a digital mileometer than a mechanical one.

Thats what I've heard.

Only if the backlight is f**ked.
I'm inclined to agree with Mark, if anything it will be down to type approval (digital speedo's are too fast in the response stakes, and as a result they can produce very wild figures when travelling at anything other than an established speed).
Easier to clock (sorry I mean 'apply mileage correction) a digital mileometer than a mechanical one.
Spot on :y
Every car dealer in the world would have a go at the mechanical speedo.
Electronic dashes of the late eighties/early nineties meant the dealers had to pay people an absolute minimum of £150 a go to give the car a haircut (very easy money at the likes of Wanno/Blackbushe/etc when it only took 10 mins tops with a laptop to dial the new mileage in).

Guy round here does BMW digitals for £40! ::) (What's the mileage?, What mileage would you like sir....)

People do it for less than £40 all day long, but back in the day you paid what was asked by the man with the laptop ;)

Changing over in life would be expensive, as people have said for retooling. Omega was goign through design probably from around 1990/91, virtually nothing had digital odos then.
Does it matter?

Actually, thinking about it, my 1990 GTE which had LCD dash had a mechanical odo iirc...

So did the Senator, but the LCD's where way to chunky and looked outdated in the 90's
More modern ones with back lights tend to work better. Does not really bother me

Yup, the Senator definately had LCD dash (as did one or two other Vauxhall's at the time).

yes, and if you had lcd option, the odo was lcd as well

Whole dash was LCD, revs, speed, miles, coolant, petrol.
Nice and handy when in Europe, could switch it to kph :)

You appeared to agree with Jamie's comment re digital dash with mechanical odometer. I was disagreeing with that statement. I know Senators came with a digital dash, I had one, also had analogue before it.
Senators had lcd odometer

........ it was optional on the 24v's
Depends how old the car was. Originally digital was standard & analogue was optional. They later turned it around as digital wasn't that popular. :P

Mine was a K plate, it was qwerky, i kinda liked it, the fuel gauge needed to be more accurate though, it needed to be like the rev style, rather than just showing gallons.
Seam to remember when switched to kph it showed litres left, rather than gallons

If K plate, it was an option by then ... like mine was. Galls did change to litres when in KPH, never had a problem with the gauge, how accurate is the needle on any other analogue gauge? You always had the miles to go on the trip computer as a back up.

Cold mornings was the issue, i would start it, say there was 2 gallons in it, get to the end of the road and it would start flashing "- -" ;D
Would have loved that 24v engine in my facelift, even with DTM's views ::)
Silky smooth, very economical :) - Great S6 noise, one i had stood still for 2 years, 2 oil changes later, and the oil stayed super clean for 4k :o

Can't beat the sound of a straight 6, it has to be said.. Other than by mounting two of them in a Vee, of course. 8-)

Ah, but proven that the v6 is quicker, and was carrying more weight - yours lots more rust the faster it went....

wrong on all counts, apart from the rust ime, senator was also less juicy.Thats progress for ya.
I would have a new senny over any new omega any day of the week, and it seems so would most people who have owned both.
SENATORS RULE OK. :y :D ;D ;D

In a nut shell Albs!!!!! :y :y :y :y
My Omega's trip computer is currently sat at 20.6mpg ..... it unfortunately doesn't get much use these days, but my Senator used to average around 22/23 mpg when it was used most days to go to work & back (around 8 miles there & back) .... I can't deny it had rear arches issues ... but who cares!!! :y
-
You agree with me then! ;) ;) ;) :y

Nope, Omega every time for me. Remove the rose tints, you'll see that whilst good in its day, that was a long time ago...
-
I was still driving my senny the day before I bought the mig.Within 5 minutes I was convinced that I was downgrading in every way imaginable.I genuinely wish I had kept it now and had the bodywork restored. ;)

Rose tints definitely removed ........ ;) ;) Although I only had 2 Senators, a 12v & a 24v, I had them both for a lot of years ... around 10 yrs .... I still say that there are certain aspects of Senator ownership that is far far better than Omega ownership. I agree that some things of the Omega are superior to the Senator ... it should be , it's a newer car, but the Omega is too complicated for its own good. There are various cars here that are off the road for problems that are probably nothing more than a failed sensor of some description .... DBW car with the pre cat problems are examples that newer isn't always better! :y :y :y
And I'd still like my all sing all dancing Elite driver's seat to be lower ... like my Senator's was ;D ;D
-

I had both my Omega & Senator side by side on the drive, the Omega was a non-runner (crank sensor / DIS pack problems) & I was using the Senator till I got the Omega sorted ....... :-? Icould have spent the £5k i bought the Omega for on the Senny's body work :y :y
-
which reminds me,the only problem I ever had with the senny was a problem with a relay. The problems with the mig have been far too numerous to mention,as I sais, thats progress for ya. ;)

Relay? Start inhibit relay?
When I sold my Senator, the start inhibit circuit was 'fudged' to by-pass the wiring to the gearbox switch, which unfortunately meant it could be started in any gear! the only problem I had in 6 yrs of owning it. :y

Its a sad fact we have to have 3 way emissions control :'(
But all those alledgedly over complex sensors (which they aren't) allow gm to squeeze more performance and better emmissions. And decent economy (my 3.0 auto averaging over 25mpg despite being regularly 'exercised' ::)

Definitely start inhibit circuit ... I fitted a by-pass wire ::) & didn't have any further problems with the starter circuit.

but this has been 'discussed' many many times and we'll have to agree to dis-agree ;) ;)
I have to ask ... dd you ever own a Senator? Or are you doing a Tunnie & quoting various facts & figures from someone else ...? ::) ::)
and a Senator's usable boot space is far better than an Omega's too co os the stupid amp shelf ..... :P :P :P

Maybe either I must have the worlds best Omega, or you have a dog :-/
Always wanted a 24v Senator from the first one I ever saw on the road. Until I started driving them. So never owned one, but have been lucky (?) enough to drive a wide variety of them (mostly 3.0 24v ones). Not one has been up to the standard of my daily drive.
As to boot space, remember only post 98 elites have the shelf. That said, still reckon senny has better boot spacewise, even with the stupid CD mounting.
I agree that we will have to agree to disagree :y

And I can stop it!

To both.
Fair exchange of humour is fine but lets stop it at the picking of nits...... If we all go down that road then it would no longer be an Omega forum, very quickly.
Thanks...
