Title: How do I get a driver for this?

Some of you may know........that I recently purchased a second hand Race-Technology AP22 performance meter.

However.........I can't download the data into my PC.......I believe I need a driver to run the serial-usb comm port........whatever that is? :-/ :-/ :-/

I have spoken to Race-Technology but they are unable to help.......saying that the software is not their concern. :-/ :-/ :-/

Any ideas? I'm really not up to speed on such things as this. :-/ :-/ :-/

PS.........I should add.........that as a tight bastard..........I do not wish to pay for a driver. :y :y

IIRC, it just dumps the data out in text form, so you can use hyperterminal to collect it. I know there were two generations of what looks like the same logger. There is some software that does track mapping, etc, but it doesn't work with the older devices. I will dig mine out and have a play.

What are you wanting to do with the data?

AP22 I think comes with serial port -Laptop's do not have serial ports these days.

You need to get a serial to USB cable [If not already got one]
Best one I found came from a company called easysync [uk co] better support another one is prolific [far east]

If you have converter  what make?

Easysync don't don't seem to do them now!

Think you might need somethink like this?

Thanks Kevin..........I have just tried this .......using the manual as a guide.....still no data download.
Race-technology have suggested that the meter itself may be "Donald Ducked".... :-/ :-/ :y

Thanks Iggy......Yep  serial ports do seem to be old technology....
I have a USB converter.......but still no go ...sadly. :-/

I would be surprised if there's a problem with the logger, assuming it powers up and works OK standalone. Let me dig mine out and see if there's anything tricky about it.

The more I use this unit..............the more I believe it to be faulty.
........I have just recorded ....one eighth of a mile in 11.53 secs at 68 mph..(seems about right).....but then it went on to complete a quarter mile...in 9.54 secs....at 121.6 mph.....(which is 'dangle berries'..!!!!)
Also 0-10(Ten)mph....in 41.34 secs.....in a distance of 6ft......crazy.... :D :D :y

Is your RS232 to USB convertor correctly installed & recognised?

Was the RS232 to USB convertor supplied with the hardware, or did you purchase seperately?

What software are you using to access the AP22?

There is an easy way to check the basic sensor and electronics are ok. Put the unit on a totally level surface. Enter "Display G force" then "Acceleration G force". Check the C value on the left of the display. It should read zero. Tip the unit up so the dispay is facing upwards and it should read 1g (say 0.9-1.1). Tip it so that the display is facing down and it should also read 1g. It should change smoothly between 0 and 1g depending on the angle it faces.

You can do the same in the cornering G force menu by tipping the unit onto one side, then the other.

You can also try setting it up for a 0-60 time, start with it sitting level and then tip it onto its' front and leave it for a few seconds. You should end up with a 0-60 run in just under 3 seconds.

It should be as close as possible to sitting flat and level in the car.
 
Is the vehicle data plausible?

Mass doesn't matter so much except for BHP calculation but it's about 1700 plus load for an Omega.

CdA is about 0.3 for an Omega IIRC.
Rolling resistance - who knows? 0.013 is the value on mine.
Tilt factor - mine is set to 0.007
Roll Factor - 0.011
Smoothing 0.004

None of the above will make a drastic difference to acceleration times, though. :-/

I haven't used mine for a while but I got a plausible answer the one time I tried it in the Omega - about 8.1 seconds 0-60 for a simple "floor it in sport mode" launch.

Keep meaning to bring it to a meet. Then again, it can't be used properly without a <cough> private test track.

The people who look after my private test track might arrest notice if we start doing too much "testing".

Yes....I'am connected via both a USB...converter to the serial port....and the RS232 lead.

The computer does not recognise there is new hardware plugged in..... :-/ :-/ :-/

The RS232 came with the unit........the USB came from a separate source.......I did not have the disc to go with it.

I have tried two types of software downloaded from the Race- Technology web site........but still no luck... :-/ :-/ :-/

The race tech software only works with the latest AP22s. I don't know a way of determining which version you have but their latest software wouldn't work with mine.

You won't get a "new hardware" indication on the PC with this device nor does it need a driver because it's not a "plug and play" peripheral.

As long as you have the driver for the USB to Serial interface lead, and Hyperterminal, then you have everything you need.

IIRC, mine needed a null modem cable to connect it to the pc ( or serial-to-usb adaptor). Do you have the original cable that came with the unit or are you using a generic one?

The only time it will talk to the PC is if you do a run and then output the results. What you get is essentially a table showing the acceleration intervals or, if you did a raw measurement, a table of the raw measurement values that you can then import into Excel, etc. to manipulate.

Thanks Kevin ......for the first part .....I get a reading of approx......0.94-0.96g.
Then.............I tried your 0-60 test six times ..
the results are........2.98......in 128ft
.................4.26...........also in 128ft
..................3.05.......again in 128ft
..................3.04.......again in 128ft
...................3.04...... again in128ft
..................3.00........again in 128ft

I tried a standing quarter mile test last night.....the AP22.......recorded 60ft.......330ft........660ft times.......but then went back to 60ft times..(no quarter mile time or terminal speed)....I drove over one mile to be sure.... :-/ :-/ :-/

I also tried a 30-70mph test......The AP22 recorded......30-120 mph.......in 6.54....and 173 ft.....Jesus......my Omega is quick.... ;D ;D ;D....Any ideas?.

Tilt is set at O.015..... :y :y :y

OK. I'm probably not the most competent to comment on mechanical stuff, but I might be able to help with this on  ;)

What OS you're using? XP, Vista ..? Have a look at Device Manager by right clicking My Computer then Properties, Hardware tab and then Device Manager button. Do you see Ports (COM & LPT) listed there? Any USB to serial ports listed under that? If not, can you see any USB to serial devices listed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in dev. manager? Or any devices with a yellow exclamation mark in there?
